It's rough in some places because of a change of leadership partway through meaning a reorganization of how the game was being made with a fairly short development time, including stuff like the lighting system being completely gutted compared to what was shown at E3. Also has lots of weird odd quirks unique to it and set it apart from DaS1 that really show that a lot of From oldheads were probably working on it. Simply was rough in a number of places and too different and so generally seen as not as good as its predecessor. It not actually being a game by Miyazaki doesn't help either
I genuinely enjoyed 2 the most all the way through and when I first beat it I immediately wanted to jump back in and play it through again. Back end of DaS1 is a fucking slog and DaS3 just drags on way too long and feels just really uninspired. I was shocked at how much Elden Ring felt like Dark Souls 2 2 more than any other souls game
