Why is there such a negative aura around early 3D games?

GTA III was grim and gloomy. Plenty of early 3D games that are bright and colorful (Mario 64).

Do you mean societally? Because there isn't, unless you're a zoomer or a games media cuck shilling the latest useless advancement in graphical photorealism.

Because developers didn't understand it yet

Sure, but there's also something ominous about them.

Developers were in the process of learning 3D which led to unintentional abstract environments. The prevalence of fog often set an eerie atmosphere which is heightened by the fact that a lot of early 00s games were already set in dark grimy urban settings.

I'm not sure you can call a game a full decade into mainstream 3d design "early".

It's just the way the game worlds felt dead. Not much content.

Yes. That's exactly my point. They portray a world that seems to have an inherent darkness underneath. Maybe because of the tech limitations. Maybe because of those Y2K grungy aesthetics of urban decay. Who knows. In any case, I find them deliciously beautiful. They remind me a bit of Silent Hill.

Don't like to say this but in the case of GTA3 it did not age well. Especially when Vice City and San Andreas were so much better. VC for its 80's miami/scareface vibe and San Andreas for being such an amazing sandbox of fun.

Early 3d games have a vibe, but I don't find anything ominous about it, no.

Bitch please, GTA 3 is pure Y2K Sopranos/Matrix/Jacob's Ladder kino. It has easily the most unique atmosphere of the 3D trilogy.

Good games knew they needed to invite the player into their world.
