So, what really did go wrong? Because I didn't hate it or the remake as much as some of you seem to. Is it simply due to it not being classic turn based? Is it the changes to the story? Is it the fact that they split it up into multiple games?
If you asked anyone 20 years ago if a FFVII remake would do well, you'd almost have a unanimous "Yes" from the fans.
Yet, the response has been mixed, at best.

Hardcore fans hate the fact everything is stretched out as much as it is, and the changes to the story.
JRPG purists hate the action combat
WRPG fans hate how japanese it is

This game was made for nobody in particular, and that hurt it the most

Again, I had no issue with the games as is other than the stupid whispers or whatever, but the main complaint I have seen is that it's much a departure from the original game.

I find it hard to believe anybody would play these remakes and not immediately fall in love with them because of the amazing combat, excellent music and charming characters. Like what games have you even played in recent years that are comparable to this? These remakes are pretty unique in its own right and breath of fresh air.

Specifically with rebirth I think there was too much to 'do' to the point that people burnt out on the game. I actually think its a pretty well paced game if you only do the main storyline. The moment you get the urge to fill in checkboxes is when it starts going down hill. The actual proper side quests are fun enough though.

Nothing rebirth is exactly what remake should have been. Remake was cursed with being the slogfest tutorial area of the original. It should have ended at the farm of getting your first chocobo.

The story changes hurt the most and they turned FF7 into a shitty mystery box story with no real meaning to it.

All of the changes, both big and small have made it worse off. Stuff from Zack, Whispers and spamming Sephiroth ahead of time, to changing Dyne's death.

The only positive was increased character interactions.

Rebirth is objectively the better game of the three. Rebirth deserved better, rare instance of gamers failing a game instead of a game failing gamers.

Ignoring the obviously horrible storytelling, my main problems with it was that the combat got boring and tedious really fast, and that leveling up didn't feel good, which is the cardinal sin for an rpg.

Fuck off, I played Rebirth right before Expedition 33 and the quality in dialogue and storytelling between them(in E33's favor, of course) was so obvious it's not even funny.
Also, SE should just stop trying to make "open world" games and focus on more linear stuff, garbage side content in both Rebirth and 16 drags their overall quality down so much.

If FF16 was linear it would actually be full 3 points better than it is currently (5/10). The player does not need the power to travel freely between locales to complete side quests that are sub-mmo -tier. Short story focused action game that is replayable is infinitely more engaging than the bloated mess they shat out.

This is to OG FFVII what The Hobbit movies were to the book. They added an incredible amount to one story in order to stretch both franchises into 3 movies/games and the additions were absolute junk. 7R trilogy's gameplay is largely alright though but the story changes are retarded

That's the issue basically, for anyone who paid attention rebirth ruins almost every big scene in disk 2 just so part 3 can be something new

>Cid and the big materia quest being shifted to yuffie
>Sephiroth says all the timelines are connected to the planet so rocket town is completely fucked because leaving to space defeats the entire purpose of the new story
So expect part 3 to be a mess

Oh yea the open world stuff might as well just be a different game, was immensely disappointed none of the characters actually reacted to any of the places in the open world and only spoke in side quests or on the way to the main quest
Also chadley is the worst thing square has ever created
