They were voicing frustration in an industry padded with non stop positivity, lies, false paid-for reviews / access journalism, where every single review in a magazine was telling you how good the next product is, only for it to always, ALWAYS be shit. Everyone was trying to be nice, so the idea of counterculture came about once again to say, fuck it, these games SUCK and that resonated with people.

Yeah we have the exact same issue now, only the industry learned from the past, and made sure to discredit you as chuds and gamergate nazis... what you think that wasnt deliberately done by a higher power? Video games were starting to hit the mainstream, and people were desperately trying to cling to any facade of being hardcore or experience (in turn, experienced enough to be disgruntled over things). Some people took this a step further and leveraged things to make money off of insecure g*mers and curious yet ignorant normalfags by producing reviews, attracting both while shitting on the hobby.

It's a silly and mostly harmless thing in retrospect. I think the only problems ever stemmed from cases like Yahtzee, who caused legions of people to become uber-pretentious about whether games "respected their time" or were "art" (and usually with a bias against multiplayer as well), contributing a lot to people calling fun-for-the-sake-of-fun games "slop" and inadvertently losing ground against shitty "artsy" movie games for a decade.
