People aren't critical enough about video games being front-loaded because it really is a travesty for the back half of a game to be unfinished, less interesting, weaker, and a worse experience.

It's just youtube reviewer brain that prefers games this way, because then they're done and on to the next review quickly and don't really care about the shitty back half.

What games are dogshit for the entire first half but then suddenly somehow become amazing in the back end?

That's how it's always been. Read any critically acclaimed book, almost anything anyone talks about is in the first few chapters. It really makes you wonder how many people actually read the entire thing.

That’s exceptionally rare because Devs usually know when stuff is shit, and they also know that the early portions of game are where 95% of reputation comes from. So early game always gets the most effort put in.

Add to that that the English translation cleaned up a lot of the spelling and grammar mistakes of the German original.

The German original is even MORE of an incoherent /pol/ shizo-post rambling. Terrible prose, grammar and tons of typos included. The first major crime Hitler committed was to release this fucking crime against the German language.

The second half of Dark Souls is just as good as the first and anyone who says otherwise is an NPC repeating whatever he first hears from streamers.
New Londo/Abyss: Great
Dukes Archives/Crystal: Great
Great Hollow/Ash Lake: Great
Tomb of Giants: Great
The only area that's not great is Demons Ruins/Izalith and even that has parts of it that are good like the temple.
