because it's very impressive.
It has a highly detailed open world, a robust combat system and unlike most action games (DMC) it's not just hallways. there is a wide scope of variety and content, there are secrets to find and things to explore all over the maps.
I was very impressed with it after being disappointing by DMC5.

It's not bad, if an anon told me it was in their top five I wouldn't double check. Action is fine and it has more world exploration going on than the flat zero Lament of Innocence had.

Plus Castlevania: Judgment was fresh on everyone's minds and most people were just happy it wasn't that.
Critics just put whatevers the most popular in the top 5. Most of them put SOTN and Aria in the same list, which is putting a bunch of random slapdash game jam games taped together and the actual final finished piece in the same list.

Most accesible Castlevania. I remember my dudebro friends were all over this game. Your 360 had Halo 3 for fps, Gears for tps and Castlevania LoS for hack n slash. It got so many 10/10 reviews at the time. Perhaps LoS2 tainted its legacy, sure. This was the castlevania joe six pack played. That's assuming people actually stuck around to trudge through hours upon hours of generic medieval settings, babys first god of war combat & bosses like golems & ogres spammed over & over again until the game suddenly remembers its supposed to be castlevania. I didn't even know an actual castlevania style boss showed up until years later because I dropped the game after like 7 hours & out of my friends who all bought the game on release I played it the longest. Thats why no one bought the sequel, fool me once & all that.
