Starlit Season is the obvious go to since it has an actual PC port, it's UE so you can easily install mods, there's a translation patch that covers the UI and the game's first month of story but after that you're on your own.

It looked high quality, and Studio Khara animated it too. I'd kill for a Gainax/Trigger-style im@s anime. I guess we're stuck with shitty CG productions from no-name studios as far as im@s anime go, because Bamco was too cheap to afford anything else for Million Live and Shiny Colors.

There's nothing necessitating that a good SoL idol anime needs to be dark or tragic. That's not to say the show lacks struggle or conflict, though. Besides the blue-haired girl's arc overcoming her younger brother's death, there's a part soon after where the usually cheery and uplifting MC falls into a depression, her dream of being an idol fading away as her fiery passion burns out. Her people-pleasing nature prevents her from asking for help, so she bottles it up and begins to lose confidence in herself and her abilities, but eventually manages to overcome this with the producer and the other idols' help. The anime is targeted at teens, but it's definitely not a show for young children. The 2-minute clip I posted doesn't do it justice. Consider giving it a look if you're curious.

How the fuck does this even happen? I thought Shiny Colors was popular as fuck (or at least it was before Uma/Gakuen took over) but it looks like they had a budget of three dollars maximum and now I hear literally no one talk about it anymore

Shiny Colors is not that popular actually, characters are popular but nobody likes the stupidly melodramatic plot of the main game, and direction-less gameplay of the second game.
It's even more obsolete now that Gakumasu released a well-written + good gameplay + good character new generation imas game, and I'm saying this eventhough I'm not a Gakumasu fag.
Pretty sure anime isn't profitable but they are doing it for the sake of marketing, that's why they make high-budget anime once in a decade, and fill the in-betweens with low-budget fillers.

The most tragic example of Bamco fucking over im@s is the way they handled the Million Live anime. Aside from ML idols featuring heavily in the 2014 Idolm@ster movie (picrel), ML had PVs in the style of the 2011 anime released in 2014, 2015 and 2017 respectively:

These looked pretty high quality and were all made by A-1. Everything made it seem like Bamco was going to directly follow up the 2011 show with a Million Live anime by A-1. It wouldn't be particularly difficult either, since ML already had a faithful 25-chapter manga adaptation by 2014 that featured the 37 ML idols along with the 13 original ones (highly recommend checking out btw), perfectly setting the stage for an anime adaptation. Instead we got absolutely nothing for years, until Bamco eventually dropped a 3DCG teaser in mid-2020 and followed it up with an unsurprisingly boring, cheap, forgettable 3DCG adaptation by some no-name studio in late-2023. Grim.

I think all the budget went to U149 as they didn't see Million Live as a series that has a potential to be the "flagship anime".
It's clear Bamco separates their anime and their budget depending on whether they'd be an anime for fans only, or anime for general audience.
I get that it sucks for Million Live fans, but ML players tend to lean towards hardcore side of the playerbase so they probably didn't see the series's potential for general audience.
Hey at least it's not Shiny Colors where they intended to attract zoomers but they failed so their position got taken over by Gakumasu

It's not like Love Live where previous project has to be abandoned for the sake of new project, all of their project are all active thanks to Bamco being a bigass company.
All of their series is still active and worked-on by different teams. Time doesn't exist in im@s universe, and it sometimes shifts and bends itself so it's better to not think too much about it.

Pretty much. There was a 1-year time skip between the events of the arcade game and the 1st console game (1st vision; picrel) and the following console games (2nd vision; >>712898148), which was accompanied by visual changes to the main 13 idols, but nothing like that has ever happened since the series shifted to primarily mobile games. The original 13 idols exist alongside the 39 Million Live idols under the company 765PRO, whereas the Cinderella Girls/U149 are part of a different idol production company, as are the Shiny Colours, SideM, and Gakumas idols respectively.
