When did guest characters in fighting games jump the shark? It's almost mandatory to have a guest in every game now and it's only anti-hype at this point.

Tekken has the worst guest characters. They just need to add semi-grounded martial arts guys but they keep doing weird Final Fantasy magic swordsmen or shit that's completely left of field like Negan. Mortal Kombat's ones make sense somehow because they tend to be throwback action or gore movie characters, but it's gotten to a point where there's just too many and it's watered down their own brand.

Fighting games have had guest character since street fighter too and most fighting games are fanservice for a media property in their entirety. It's just not appreciated anymore because these fighting games series have dozens of old characters that might not get in or won't be released to later because of Crossover characters.
