Anybody here playing tactical D&D mods? It's really the ultimate challenge in the D&D realm. There is nothing else out there. No other game, definitely not the newest release, and no other Baldurs Gate 2 mod either. SCS simply doesn't cut it if you are looking for a challenge.

i beat the game recently vanilla + switched ToB on insane difficulty cause all the broken items started to trivialize game at this point. The last fight was still such a pain in ass im not sure how people beat it ironman with difficulty mods

Vanilla is ok if you are playing for the first time or you are unfamiliar with the ruleset and refuse the learn it. After that is SCS but it's still somewhat imbalanced but the main problem is it's simply not challenging enough. After that it's Improved Anvil, but after a few playthroughs even this one becomes significantly less challenging, that's why I took it to the next level.

I don't know about that one but vanilla games in general, all vanilla games are usually imbalanced and not challenging at all. The difficulty setting usually does nothing to the AI generally speaking but even if it does it's still not challenging enough.
Improved Anvil is still far from balanced, but at least it's challenging and ca be replayed several times particularly because the BG2 storyline is so good, including all the characters and level designs.

think you are talking from perspective of a guy with thousand of hours in the game, BG1/2 + ToB are absolutely massive and will take 200h to finish assuming they dont cheat and play with a walkthrough on second monitor and still wont see a lot of stuff. If you dont have deep AD&D knowledge you will also have no idea how spells work and which one are good also without EEex to see enemy buffs you will have no fucking idea why mages are untouchable, the game can be hard as balls even on core if you are going blind. Also talking about mods for 2nd and 3rd playthrough when a 1st one can last 200h+ is kinda pointless

I applaud the effort, of course, but if you're going to difficulty mod the game to the point where you need to run a full custom party just to stand a chance, might as well just do CBT at that point if you enjoy getting your nuts crushed that much.

I don't know where I was going with that. I just wouldn't do it because it's not fun. There are mobile games nowadays with more involved gameplay than BG1-2.

It only seems that way. If you check some youtube playthroughs of SCS you will see that it's slightly above vanilla. I recently checked their scripts and was surprised to see that for all the work that went in there, which is a lot, it only makes the battles slightly more challenging in the end. It's a shame really.

Thanks. I started modding it midway through with an S-tier party indeed, but once I'm finished with everything I'd like to give it a try with an A-tier party. A well balanced party is mandatory either way (2 Arcane/2 Divine/2 Warriors)

5E made it so you basically could have one concentration spell up and drop it to cast shield as a reflex action, if I remember right.

Hilariously, this is how they test the mods to be more difficult. SCS became... too mainstream for them. So, a proper hard mod for a full custom party with max stats, every single member with a gaxx ring, easthaven flail, firetooth crossbow, etc.

also arcane casters have access to sequencers which lets you combine and casting multiple spells at once and Contingency spell which lets you prepare spell to auto cast spell under specific condition like seeing enemy, getting hit or being at 50% hp etc, the possibilities are limitless and especially with SCS enemy spell casters are loaded with this stuff.

The battle starts at min 22 and ends at min 34. He finished it in 12 mins. I got over 40 mins out of mine, which is pretty impressive I must say.
In the vanilla game or SCS this area is not even improved, it only has few regular trolls which you can finish off in Chapter 2/3.

Starts at min 10 and ends at 29. Less than 20 minutes but the Lich seems to have done zero damage to the party, which is mostly coddled in one corner. He could have finished the Lich even faster than that and likely with one character only as well.

I got over 25 minutes out of mine but the Lich did a lot more damage. He was missing PowerWord: Kill entries entries in my video, which I have since added to him among many other things and conditions.

That's interesting I didn't know about that one, it seems the old Tactics mod was revived by Morpheus562 which also did some contributions to Improved Anvil recently, animation commits.

I'd like to see some videos of the new Tactics Remix encounters, I'm curios indeed. I'm surprised there are barely any SCS videos on youtube, some are 13 years old and the one that mostly pops up in search which is a complete playthrough is 7 years old, by Mivsan_NT. I thought SCS would be more popular and there would be more videos on youtube..

Recently i found out that using ranged weapon in melee range gives you -8 Thac0 penalty and enemy melee gets bonus +4 thaco +4 extra dmg.

Contingency and Simbul's Spell Sequencer still exist in 3.x, but they aren't often available in games - IWD2/NWN/ToEE don't have them.

Is it base version only and not the EE editions?

I'll play either, just want tk now what to expect
if it's the base version are there any mods recommended that make wild mages more fun in terms of sheer fuckery of the RNG in how you can get your party killed or kill the enemy in one good/bad dice roll

I think everybody uses EE now, but Improved Anvil is not compatible yet with the latest release, so use the previous stable release instead (2.5.16).
Generally such cheesy exploits are nerfed in IA, they'll work in the vanilla game and other mods most likely.
