Sonic is not popular in Japan. Sonic is a western influenced franchise for decades now.

That's a five year gap of canon material to work off of after Archie was already forced to forge their own path with the cancellation of SatAM. You can't blame them for making lots of shit up to fill the gaps for a comic book was selling well enough to justify a monthly spin-off, yearly mini series, and a plethora of one-off specials.

Could they have done a better job on art and story? Absolutely. But much of the blame falls on Sega of Japan's arrogance during the Saturn era, completely ignoring the intense momentum the Sonic franchise built up during the Genesis years and leaving American fans clamoring for any kind of Sonic media.

SEGA is one of the coolest companies to allow fan made games to flourish.
They do that on purpose.
Sonic Mania would not have been so strong nor the adaption of CD on mobile widely accepted without Christian Whitehead.
SEGA relies very heavily on the fanbases. Sonic is the bread and butter but they also have shown in other franchises like Yakuza (Thanks to influencers) that you don't have to play skillful games like Super Monkey Ball to enjoy their products.
This whole thread shouldn't even exist considering the Gamecube Sonic Mega Collection literally featured scans of the Archie comic series as a way to promote.

People don't just lose interest in a franchise if there isn't a release for a year or two, if anything that's a more modern social media-poisoned outlook. SEGA fans in the 90s were known to be especially loyal and people were still buying Genesis games up until '97 in the US, so a lot of chances for kids to become newly acquainted with the best titles.

Also, you gotta remember Archie's Sonic comics were having their greatest success in the 90s when the rest of the industry was doing crazy shit. If you were a pre-teen in that decade, you had the choice between one industry giant that was reinventing its canon every other year with insane crossovers that made it difficult for a newcomer to approach, the other industry giant running the same convoluted canon since the 60s that was experimenting with mature themes and shockbait, or a bunch of fly-by-night outfits that would more likely than not fold entirely before you could get really attached to their "fresh" approach to storytelling. And Mom wouldn't have bought any of those for you with everything she heard in the news about violence in media, so kids were more likely to be allowed the funny animal comic by the traditionally family-friendly Archie Comics

Not entirely true.
I have said this time and time again that Sonic works better as a multimedia marketable character known for it's comics, movies, animation series vs the actual current games.
Sonic can easily survive without the games at this point. He's a very easily adapable cartoon character and people as young as my nephew loves him in the Sonic Prime show on Netflix, reading my comics and seeing rhe movies. He's never touched a Sonic game before in his life.

So there's actually a plethora of reasons why Archie ended the way it did and none of them had to do with the quality of the comic itself.

This is a pretty infamous one - in order to avoid legal troube with Penders the Archie Sonic comic had to pivot to a reboot that erased every single non-SEGA or SatAM character from the comic canon.
There were still some 100 or so issues released for the comic after this happened.

One of the last storylines the Sonic comic ever did was a Mega Man crossover which went WAY beyond just Mega Man - pretty much every SEGA and Capcom character you could think of had at least a cameo in this thing.
I don't think it's ever outright been confirmed, but Archie took a heavy blow from needing the license to all these characters and the comic wasn't really able to recoup the cost.
