That's not even new with nintendo.
Every single console they did is about boosting the perceived value somehow, be with raw power or gimmicks when raw power is not available.
From the famicom where they bought 7 million chips from a chip plant that was about to close the doors to get a minuscle price, to the N64 that uses a massive integrated super chip that does everything, to the gamecube and 3DS that use unknown GPU brands (ArtX/Pica), to 3D screens and touch screens and cheap screens and accelerometers and..

When the price goes up, the number of sales goes down and vice versa.
However it's not a linear function, and depending on the game, the hype and all that it might be worth pricing it more.
Also there's the fomotard effect, where there is a portion of the population that will buy games for elevated prices, even if you slash the price of the game down the line, so you start up with a high price, then you slash it later when you run out of fomotards. (which in the case of mario kart may never happen).

The sad fact is the only reason Valve's model works is because they're a privately owned company and are badly to make a functioning product and then coast on that, for better or worse.
A public company simply cannot do that, they are required by law to do everything they can to squeeze as much money out of consumers as possible, such would inevitably turn into nickel and diming every last thing, and then shutting the entire thing down when it makes $5 less than it did last month.

My friends have steamdecks, and had to shell out for used PS5s to play Wilds with the gang, while everyone who had PCs built had to shell out for new hardware. The deck can't even play "older" stuff like XIV, SF6, or Stranger of Paradise, or Dragon's Dogma 2 at an acceptable level. They may be games made by AAA cunt companies like Capcom and SE, but that's an inherent weakness in the PC environment nobody likes to mention. The PS5 may be a waste of money (I'd never buy one), but it WILL play the games released for it without tinkering or expensive hardware updates. If you don't have Switch 1 then totally, a lot of games (even ones that didn't get official patches) run much much better. I've been having a ton of fun playing dumb ass Saints Row IV again just because the load times are essentially instant now.
If you do have a regular Switch ehhhhhhhhh I justified it because I've had mine for years and play it all the damn time and also I'm not poor but you've probably got a solid year before there's that many games you gotta play for it. Mario Kart is nice but it's still basically just mario kart.

The console isn't overpriced, it's the best price/performance ratio of any handheld currently on the market (and those don't come with a dock, detachable joycons and cartridge readers).
But above all, they release games, and they release FUN games, i.e. games whose main goal is to enjoy playing them. The gameplay isn't just a sidedish for the main course of narrative-driven mindless button smashing woke nonsense like with western publishers.
PS5 is more expensive now than it was 5 years ago, sells $200 controllers with no hall effect, has no exclusives and 90% of their games have a black woman main character that looks like an ugly piece of garbage. But hey, the piece of garbage has more pixels in it!!!
