>'I’m going to be very honest, we have been testing the game with players and the results are too good. They like it too much. That means something is wrong; we have to change something.'
>According to Kojima, "If everyone likes [your work], it means it’s mainstream. It means it’s conventional. It means it’s already pre-digested for people to like it."

It's an insecure way of pre-empting middling reviews by going on the record to say you made the game worse "intentionally"
It also plays into this fart sniffing image of an auteur that Kojima so desperately craves and is extremely on brand for le creatividad

Hes asian george lucas. The less control he has over the product, the better it turns out. Up until mgs4 he had tard wranglers making sure he didn't shart all over the games. After, hes basically been ouroboros tubgirling himself with his own hype. Thats why mgs4, 5, and death stranding were such fucking garbage

I hate retards that parrot this line about George, there was absolutely no point in the development of any of his Star Wars films where he didn’t have full creative control over the final product. I challenge anyone to find a single source that refutes what I just said. Ditto for Kojima, please adduce evidence demonstrating he was tard-wrangled or “told no” for any of his games. Yes, he listens to feed back from his staff/play-testers, but that’s quite distinct from some notion that there’s a cabal of editors/collaborators who were the REAL creative masterminds behind his most palatable works.

I must say that the game received rave reviews, especially in Europe and Japan. Here in the United States, however, we have had stronger criticisms. Perhaps it is a difficult game to understand for a certain type of critic and audience. Americans are great fans of first-person shooters and Death Stranding isn't one, it flies higher.

I always try to create new things and disputes and discussions are fine, but it must be said that the Italians or the French have a different artistic sensibility that allows them to appreciate this kind of very original product, not only in video games but also in cinema.

Unironically great design and very common in Kojima games.

He loves introducing weapons as a mechanic that trivializes the entire game. But there is always a drawback.

Usually in MGS you simply don't get as many good boy points as you would without lethal weapons. And there's also the ludo dissonance in how Snake is not supposed to murder other soldiers needlessly. These psychological elements are usually enough to make most people abdicate from lethal guns.

And that is why it is brilliant. If a game just doesn't give you weapons, you keep thinking it is lazy design and it could have had them. See: Subnautica.

On the other hand, if a game gives you weapons, but puts you through the protagonist's moral dilemmas and lets you consciously choose to NOT use weapons... It is kino.

>Usually in MGS
There is no draw back in going lethal in MG 1-2, and original release of MGS 1.
And non-lethal option is stronger, gameplay wise, than lethal one in all MGS. Knocked out enemies don't raise alarm when they are discovered. Enemies don't get suspicious if you poke them full of tranq darts either.

Point me to a single creative contribution Kurtz made to episodes 4-5. You can’t because there isn’t one. He was a producer, his job was to secure funding for the movies and make sure they staid within their budget. And he didn’t step out over “creative disagreements”, he was in fact fired because production on Empire was a shit show, in large part because of his budgetary negligence. All this is to say is that Kurtz can go on a retroactive press tour decades later and cry foul about “creative differences” all he wants , it has no bearing on facts or reality.

Yeah he was over budget and over schedule this one time on his very ambitious highly systems based open world stealth project which his team was developing alongside a cutting edge game engine. How is this evidence that higher ups were “tard wrangling” him vis-a-vis his design or narrative ideas, this tells us nothing of the sort. They were bitching about their investment, not what specifically Kojima was doing with that investment.
