Final Fantasy X always is a comforting game for me, it's stuck with me ever since I first played it. The atmosphere is just great and the beautiful soundtrack definitely helped.
It's the last Sakaguchi game, it's the last Uematsu game. Hell, it's literally the last Squaresoft Final Fantasy before the m*rger. It's really interesting seeing how they were trying to evolve the formula and the tech, and you can only imagine what the series would have been if Sakaguchi stayed at the helm.

FF was created by Sakaguchi and Uematsu, who doesn't get enough credit for the series. he was more than just a guy who wrote songs and then the designers used his songs. he was part of the design process from day 0.

Final Fantasy lifespan and cultural relevance has parallels with that of the Simpsons. at a point, in the 90s, it was THE powerhouse, and it was the result of a number of producers, who each brought their own stylistic approach to things. for example, the Simpsons' characters were created by Groening, who was an overly cynical cartoonist; Sam Simon brought writing talent and that intellectual aspect it has, and brooks made sure that deep character development/family dynamics were there. all of these contributed to the show's massive success.

Sakaguchi was the creator, and his style is clearly traditional, old-school RPG. he was friends with Uematsu and brought him on early. before the series really took off, they got Kitase (he brought more cinematic considerations to the development), and how could we forget nomura (who initially was just an illustrator, but quickly moved up the ladder, bringing his signature dreamlike approach to design mixed with fashion).

all of these different things, which feel disparate, had perfect cohesion with each other and contributed toward a perfect vision. and, for a time, it was perfect.

all these guys are like the bottom of the jenga tower. you take one out, and the vision immediately loses its cohesion. when sakaguchi left, there was no central vision anymore. we had copies (like ivalice) but they never achieved the cultural resonance that FF had at its peak.

Matsuno wasn't a "copy". He had a distinct style, wildly different from team Gooch, and all of his games are great. He was the best chance for Square to have somebody with a vision at the helm after Gooch, but they blew it, like they blew everything else.

On the flip side, each of those guys do have their own visions and are auteurs in their own right.

Only Nomura could have made Kingdom Hearts, for instance, just like only Kitase could have have made FFVIII and only Sakaguchi could have made the SNES titles.

It's crazy just how quality everything was in the 80s/90s/early 00s. We just assumed everything in the future would be just as good if not better. We had no idea how quickly everything would turn to shit and how far it would fall. I wish I could've appreciated what we had when we had it.

FFVIII was primarily a collab between Kitase and Nomura with Sakaguchi as a consultant, but KH is pure Nomura (Tai Yasue and and Jun Akiyama were also involved, but mostly as co-writers/scenario writers).

Confirmation bias. You are forgetting all the shite due to your lack or exposure or selective memory. Even songs considered classic today were not on the top 100 charts that were filled with slop decades ago when they released.

The first KH was also the last game Square made before the Merger, which probably explains why the first game has such a unique vibe compared to the others. Itโ€™s got that weird and dream-like Squaresoft vibe.

There was some pretty bad slop from back then. The only difference is that they were barely playable and often obtuse because QoL features werenโ€™t as common even for some of the best games of the era.

The slop of the past has been forgotten just like todayโ€™s slop will be forgotten. No matter what the era, only the good games are remembered.

Same. I've been seeing more positive FFX posts on /v/ over the last year. Not sure why.

Something I like about older FF games is that the spaces feel very personal. They are drawn with such care, and have this personal touch to them. Although, I know that millions of other people played this game, it still feels like it's my experience. Compare that to 'yet another corridor' you walk down in FF13, 15, 16.

I think something was lost when we moved away from pre-rendered backgrounds - this happened with Resident Evil as well.

cast the widest possible net for the largest possible market share. I think we should go back to Wizardry at this point and snub it all until AAA studios die, like anon in another thread said.

Picture related, this is what I think has been going on for years: that DEI takes away individual agency in such a way that the product is not only for minorities, but that they have to buy the product instead of another, as if the minorities are now indebted to the companies.
What if I want to play a hard game rather than a clip show? Am in in the minority then, now?

this is true and something ive thought about going back a pretty long time

real-time environments, which was one of the marketing points of ffx's tech, serve a great purpose for dynamic camera movement where the area is benefitted by having the perspective follow the player
but for static areas, pre-rendered backgrounds offer much more in terms of detail, saturation, presentation, etc like dioramas from i-spy books
full of small secrets and designed to invoke curiosity and certain moods and thoughts

its not an unknown aspect or phenomena of graphic design, but definitely lost in our current age of video games

For the whole industry, sure, it's bias.
For Square?
In 1991~2001 we got:
Final Fantasy IV
Romancing SaGa
Final Fantasy V
Secret of Mana
Final Fantasy VI
Front Mission
Romancint SaGa II
Romancing SaGa III
Live a Live
Seiken Densetsu III
Threasure of the Rudras
Chrono Trigger
Parasite Eve
Final Fantasy VII
Front Mission II
Brave Fencer Musashi
Final Fantays Tactics
SaGa Frontier
Final Fantasy VIII
Front Mission III
Parasite Eve II
Final Fantasy IX
Chrono Cross
Vagrant Story
Legend of Mana
Final Fantasy X
Sorry, that destroys the output of SQEX's late 00's and the whole 10's.

Prerendered stuff has a target resolution. It looks like ass when scaled up, and is unintelligible with scaled down (play Still Life in 480i on Xbox. Some puzzles are impossible). Realtime 3D can be infinitely scaled, and even muddy textures from the 90s don't hurt it too much.

That's not the same thing as just scaling a prerendered scene. Imagine just being disingenous and not feeling bad. My picrel a PSX prerendered scene scaled with nearest neighbor. It looks worse than at native resolution, especially with the 3D models being rendered at a higher resolution on top of it.
Prerendered is largely not done for that very reason. Fixed camera angles can still be done with realtime 3D with success.

yeah, but that's what Square said about the "4 niggaz in a row" genre too. I think that if, hear me out, Square's announced that their next FF game would be:

>pre-rendered + real-time (when appropriate)

>art style will closer to the Fantasy of 6, 9, and 10
>turn based
>music inspired by Uematsu instead of orchestra slop and Gregorian chants
>2 year dev cycle
>story-tone similar to X, no goofy weeb shit and no talking cats doing the moon walk
>on every platform (pc, Switch 2, xbox, ps5) - no exclusive deals with snoy corp

I believe it would succeed.

it's a fantastic game
anyone who tells you it sucks is parroting something they heard someone else say
people will say tidus is annoying because he never shuts up or talks about food all the time, whereas he's very introspective and mentions being hungry a handful of times at the beginning of the game because he keeps getting transported 100s of miles without any food
it's an easy 9/10 game, and I say this as someone who avoided it for 20s years because people said it was lame and then I played it this month and it was amazing

the twilight hour light which also comes through in the spirits with that tropical daydream-aesthetic just fits the melancholic themes and story so well. The lessons of these types of stories is always to learn to let go, instead we just become obsessed with the works themselves and cling to them like crazy. Maybe it wasn't worth it bros, maybe I wish I could use art as motivation and fuel to change my own life, but it doesn't it all just turns to escpism in the end fug.

hard agree, older final fantasy games let you enjoy the world around you more than newer games which feel like they're trying to push you from one area to the next as quickly as possible. i've associated the final fantasy series with being able to appreciate the environment the games are trying to portray to the players through visual elements that newer final fantasy games feel completely foreign to me after ffx
