Powerscaling should be on an oscillating curve that gradually increases. For example: Game starts easy, game gets hard, game gets easy again, game gets a little bit hard, game gets easy, game gets harder, and so on.

HAVE GOOD GEAR AT THE START, PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD
>god I fucking love bronze sword (start) -> iron sword (early game) -> steel sword (middle of the game) -> silver sword (endgame) -> excalibur (postgame)
NO, FUCK THAT, GIVE ME SOMETHING ACTUALLY COOL INSTEAD OF MINOR STAT INCREASES UNTIL THE VERY END OF THE GAME
>oh you did all the sidequests and beat all the optional bosses, cool, here's a sick ass Greatsword that you can only use on the last superboss because you killed everything else already
FUCK YOU, GIVE ME MORE SHIT EARLY ON, THAT WAY YOU CAN MAKE THE GAME HARDER BECAUSE I HAVE MORE OPTIONS, AND THEN THE GAME WILL BE MORE FUN BECAUSE I GET TO EXPERIMENT WITH MORE STUFF FOR A LONGER PERIOD OF TIME

Both shit, should be more a sine wave since power scaling is relative to enemy difficulty. So you should become noticeably stronger before the threat is escalated, making the player feel weaker again, only to trivialise it by getting stronger again. Repeat about 3 to 10 times.

Pretty much, getting no challange is boring, feeling like you don't get stronger is tedious. So just switch between the two a few times and give the new enemy a coolguy anime entrance to communicate to the player that things got serious again.

The only thing I don't get is why RPGs never give you the feeling of going from Jackie Chan to Goku. You always either end the game as "normal dude who hits hard" or start the game as a superhero. It feels like you don't actually make that much progress. And then when a game does try to make you feel like you're getting stronger, it does it by just literally giving up and making you a demigod out of nowhere near the end of the game.

There is nothing more ass than a combat game that gives the player too much vision, too much movement, too much invincibility, too many resources, too powerful hitboxes and worst of all: limits the "real" gameplay to 1v1s for no reason at all even though multi-target fights have infinitely more encounter design potential and demand greater mastery of a game's systems and mechanics. If anything combat games should start with 1v1 encounters and shift to multi-target fights to actually justify powering up the player at all.

This is why I like playing Souls games with randomizer as the deprived class. Especially with the modifier that armor sets are never found together, just given one piece at a time. You'll spend much of the earlygame finding weapons that you can't use due to the stat requirements, so you're left with rags and clubs for a while. Very stressful and fun.

The worst imo is when items have no identity, examples being the cd project red games where you can find leveled variants of most the weapons in the game so it never really feels like progression you just go in your inventory and equip the one with the biggest number

Some of the Digimon games are basically this.
You can Digivolve to increase your base stats but it sets your level back to one. And then you can Devolve to a previous form to lower your base stats but increase your maximum level and stat potential (which is often needed to get to the highest-tier forms). So you're cycling your dudes through their forms and bouncing their individual power scales around.

Based take. Too many games forget that progression isn't just about numbers going upβ€”it's about what those numbers mean. If level 50 and level 5 feel the same because enemies scale with you or gear is just β€œ+1” tiered nonsense, then what's the goddamn point? You may as well be throwing darts at a spreadsheet.

nah thats terrible game design.
it just results in the player eventually getting to another hurdle or "oh fuck its this bullshit grind again" and just quitting.
Satisfactory and Factorio do this shit a lot, as well as a lot of survival crafting games.
You get to a point where you finally unlock a bunch of shit, and to progress to the next area/tier/thing you need to grind a bunch of gay bullshit. Shit is such a chore.

Yeah, it used to be a normal mechanic in old MMOs.
If you died you lost 10% of your level and you could lose levels.
A bad weekend of wiping in raids could force you to have to spend another week or two grinding to get back to max lvl so you can equip your gear again.

the top curve is more natural and intuitive because most general functions are unlocked early (giving you time to actually use and play with them), and then power up as you go on. the variety/options in arsenal, as well as the varied general utility accounts for most of the power. it generally feels better to have all of the tools and then upgrade them than it does to get a tool and only be able to use it for 10% of the game.
