What is the X even supposed to stand for? WHY would anyone at the time not just abbreviated it to PS if they didn't want to say playstation?
>>712957060 (OP) Because of the retarded nature of the gaming "journalists" who had to follow a retarded trend for fear that the retarded public wouldn't recognize Sony's highly successful video game console if they named PS or Playstation instead of PSX.

PSX is some weird zoomer revisionist history. Everyone I knew (which is all that matters) called it the PS1. I even had PSM magazine and it was only called PS1 there as well.
>>712957060 (OP) As an American I've never heard anyone refer to the Playstation as a PSX IRL. It's either "Playstation", "PS1" or "original Playstation". Maybe it was an adult thing.
>>712964797 After there was a PS2, the use of psx ramped down considerably compared to PS1. Because before there was a two, there was zero reason to use a one when mentioning it. That said, the abrvs one uses in text are typically different than voice, and this is a good example. Playstation has three syllables. PSX has three syllables. Hence no purpose to using the abreviation out-loud, ditto PS1.
>>712965370 >there was zero reason to use a one when mentioning it. I feel like I'm going insane. There's zero reason to use an X when mentioning it too, ever. Where does the X come from? What's the logic?
>>712957060 (OP) The PSX is a fan name for the original Sony Playstation that came from English language video game magazines in the US before that model of PSX was made.
It's the same reason the NES and SNES designations exist despite those systems being known verbally as the "Nintendo" and "Super Nintendo" in America. Every console the gaming magazines talked about had to have some abbreviated designation like that.
>>712957060 (OP) In australia, in gaming mags, it was referred to as the psx. When this >>712958094 was released, mainstream media started to call the playstation a psx. That's what happens when a country enforces trademarks, thankfully.

People wrote it as PSX but nobody in the real world ever called it anything but "Playstation". "Pee Es Ex" wasn't a thing. It's like everyone on the internet calls Super Saiyan "SSJ" but nobody ever says "Es Es Jay" in the real world instead of Super Saiyan.
>>712968132 Fuck off, you retarded child. Everyone called it PSX back then and your "magazine" belongs in the garbage like the entire country of Britain.
>>712969158 https://archive.org/details/playstation-plus-37/page/78/mode/2up?view=theater I agree that psx was a common and used term. Seeing this argument happen even at the time in a contemporary source was funny so I saved it for the next time I saw a thread.
>>712969323 Well, that is your opinion. But I want to remind you again that you aren't correct. Your entire premise relies on something that isn't true.

>>712957060 (OP) Bunch of retards in this thread. Sony released a newer version of the PlayStation called PlayStation One. It was smaller than the original design. To differentiate the versions, people started calling the original design PSX after the original joint project between Sony and Nintendo during the SNES era which Sony pulled out of and developed the PlayStation instead.

this is the one of the weirder bits of revisionist history that's been inflicted upon the world... the only logical reasoning here is they want for the PS10 to be the PSX but don't want people to be confused.

The ps1 had a gigantic library with HUNDREDS of great/good games and basically infinite hidden gems but the only thing you motherfuckers born 12/31/1999 want to talk about is what elementary school kids called it on the playground in the 20th century.

Back in the day we called it the PS1 the PSX before the actual PSX was even released. Because the codename for the PS1 was PSX. That codename was chosen because sony also released the MSX previously.
