Its dialogue was rough around the edges when viewed from a modern lens, but the fact is that Super Mario 88 was a master class in game design. It was finally a solution for good 3D game design that other developers could not see before. It was not easy though, it took a few years, and Shigeru Miyamoto even described it as "my struggle".
