The thing that killed the newer games is the fact that they tried to make it way too real. In the older games everything was so much faster and more arcade-y. You could run at 40mph and hit someone with a clothesline that causes the other person to do a double backflip. It was fun as fuck. Nowadays everything is so fucking stiff.
