This is the one thing that Kojima has ever done first.
>make a massive open world, virtually nothing but land
>add an excuse storyline and really shitty gameplay onto it
>pay to hangout with hollywood actors, scan their faces and feet as part of the deal
>throw it on Steam
Both of these games are a scam. Open world is a red flag, unless the developer makes clear that the open world isn't the selling point

depends, I like open worlds of nier, stellar, skyrim or witcher in a way that I just like wandering around and sightseeing, it's relaxing, but then if you just want to play the game, like do quests and stuff, open world and running from a to b is just a chore.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Death Stranding. The gameplay is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of the trigger buttons most of the traversal will go over a typical gamer's head. There's also Kojima's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his writing - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Hollywood movies, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these references, to realize that they're not just films - they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Death Stranding truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the meaning behind Amelie's existential catchphrase "Like Mario and Princess 'Beach'" which itself is a cryptic reference to videogame classic, Super Mario Bros. 2. I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Kojima's genius unfolds itself on their television screens. What fools... how I pity them. And yes by the way, I DO have a Norman Reedus tattoo. And no, you cannot see it. It's for the ladies' eyes only- And even they have to demonstrate that they're within 5 IQ points of my own (preferably lower) beforehand.

Open world usually sucks. But it works well in Death Stranding because it isn't open world for the sake of open world.
The open terrain is integrated into the gameplay loop, like another anon said, it is one of the enemies.
Finding paths, navigating obstacles, and climbing both up and down cliff sides was pretty kino.
The issue was in DS1, the last 1/3 of the game it put you against tedious terrain with the mountains. Act 1 and everything pre mountains in act 2 was really good.

My hope in DS2 is more terrain variety. I loved the riverlands and the desert areas of DS1, so hoping they do more of that.

I think death stranding is meant to be a love letter to kojima's children because he never spent much time with them, he skipped christmas to stream online all night for Konami during MGSV. I don't think he was ever there for his son.

false dilemma, also referred to as false dichotomy or false binary, is an informal fallacy based on a premise that erroneously limits what options are available. The source of the fallacy lies not in an invalid form of inference but in a false premise. This premise has the form of a disjunctive claim: it asserts that one among a number of alternatives must be true. This disjunction is problematic because it oversimplifies the choice by excluding viable alternatives, presenting the viewer with only two absolute choices when, in fact, there could be

That single moment is likely representative of a substantial amount of the core gameplay loop. It also had multiple moments around it showing the same thing. It's also the moment they showed first.
>while referencing a different type of game from a different genre.
One of the criticisms of Stafield was that plenty of planets were just empty space.

skyrim or probably even oblivion? was a mistake and did a lot of damage to games to this day. game companies to this day try to shoehorn empty open worlds into their games. look at what zelda has become for example. for someone reason games nowadays are advertised with how big their map is in actual miles/km.

To be fair I've upgraded since I first played the game but I think i ran it on my old setup of the 1080 and a 4790k. Got 60 most of the time, except for the BT fights, especially the whale one, could feel the dips there, but still playable.

I liked the first one's mechanic when playing online you could interact with other people's structures for a while but as the game got less players the world became more barren. It was rather depressing.

DS is not as bad as typical open worlds. I dislike them greatly but that game at least made the environment require some interactions and it behaved more like a puzzle than a field with trees where you pick a direction and hold W.

What have you upgraded to recently? I'm hoping to be able to get something newer soon before ds2 comes to PC

Honestly I see more the world of death stranding to be big levels than actual open world, there's still some kind of linear route for you to progress.
it's only "open world" after the story.
