That's kind of half the problem for me. Why did DK need to be non-playable again, for the second time in his own series? Dixie on a quest to save her boyfriend is enough of a plot hook but she could have been joined by the title character/Diddy's best friend instead of playing babysitter.

Just let me play as DK again lol

It can't be Dixie's game if the titular Donkey Kong is playable, obviously. She'd just be a sidekick again. Dixie having to babysit Kiddy also better fit the low stakes, comfy tone of the game.
