The mansion is more atmospheric in the original. The remake has a more generic "spooky" color palette of greys and brown. The og mansion has a much more broad color palette which helps it come across as more surreal and nightmarish. In the remake it just looks like a generic "spooky" horror movie mansion, less personality.

I'm a 41-year-old who's been a fan of RE from day one, and while OGRE2 and REmake are neck-and-neck for my favorite game of all time, I would absolutely be cool with a RE-REmake that serves as a bookend of sorts to RE9. If the RE Engine does anything well, it's creepy woods and dark/damp caverns, and RE1 has those in spades. I love the idea of being stalked by Lisa Trevor in pitch black mines where your flashlight is the only illumination. The only thing I would worry about is them turning the underground lab into some super sleek Nest shit, while the lab in OGRE1 and REmake reminds me of the bunker in Day of the Dead.

It was all about atmospheric exploration, puzzle solving, searching for "clues" to figure out what's going on in the narrative, stockpiling ammo and health items to get you through combat encounters. Shooting zombies was just one ingredient in the stew.

RE4 basically flipped the board, and made it all about shooting shit in the face.

They should have cut the caves completely when they remade it the first time and instead of the stupid elevator/crank/battery shit made the goal to open an otherwise impassible gate to the fountain. The caves and the dumb way to access them always felt like tacked on filler and it's the only stain on an otherwise perfectly paced game.
Instead they actually doubled the size of the caves, then added even more pointless backtracking and Lisa bullshit on top of that before you finally get to the labs. It just completely grinds forward momentum to a halt.

resident evil controls quite well for the time, the tank controls are well suited to the limited 2d environments and fixed camera angles that don't require you to turn to face something to view it, also doesn't hurt that the game is a rock solid 30fps. if you want to touch something that hasn't aged well play syphon filter.

I never got this shit. The Spencer Mansion has a literal Indiana Jones boulder trap, this shit was always meant to have the feel of a cheesy B movie mansion and REmake just fulfills that clearer. I think RE1 has legit merit over REmake, it's a tighter experience and not all of REmake's additions are particularly good, but aesthetics is not one of them.

The padded out shit in the remake is what wore on me after replaying the original and realizing how little fat it has. It's just full of bizarre random nonsense like the forced tutorial to get the Sword Key at the beginning of every game. Splitting the music notes in two. The stupid detour to The Cabin in the Woods(tm) to get the crank. The non-puzzle where you have to turn the Magnum crests over one by one and examine them before putting them in the grave. Destroying the crate bridge when the water in the guardhouse basement is drained. The box pushing in the new caves. Being forced to backtrack from the cabin all the way to the entrance hall after you get out of the caves. The forced walking bit with the fuel canister. That's just off the top of my head. It's all trash and adds nothing of worth to the game.

REmake is somehow clunkier than the original; In the original tapping left or right would rotate you by seemingly a degree at a time, where REmake forces you to do an entire 90 degree turn, so course correcting is a pain in the ass. There also aren't any choices for alternate endings, all of the choices you can make in Jill's route to increase her trust in Barry get reduced to a single choice toward the end of the game. While I appreciate the additional content and difficulty, I'm not a fan of every piece of the remake needing a bunch of extra steps or taking twice as long.

Remake is the worse one here.

RE5 Should have been an all Ex-STARS members showdown against Wesker.
RE6 duos should have been Chris/Jill, Leon/Claire and Sherry/Ada
RE7 should have had a real protagonist like Grace.
RE8 should have come after RE4R and featured that RE7 protag alongside agent Ashley in the role of Chris in the game.
That's how you send off your OG cast properly while building a new one that isn't completely disconnected.
