If playing vidya on CRTs was truly such a revolutionary experience then people wouldn't have throw them away so fuckin fast
It took less than half a decade to go from "Majority of brand new televisions sold in the US are CRTs" to "even high-end CRTs are literal trash often found on the side of the road"

If you're looking for a good shader setup just tinker with CRT Royale and variants to your liking. I brought my CRT out of retirement a few years ago and can't see myself going back but before that shaders served me pretty well for a bit. That said it's been a few years after all so there might be something better than Royale now. In the end, despite it all it's not about conforming to some standard but about finding the image output that looks best to you.

Yep, fake, CRT filter, probably through lossless scaling, any 4k display should be able to emulate phosphorus CRT beyond any human-discernable level, the only real downside is blacks vs whites but this can be eliminated with AMOLEDs and quantum dots.

They work by making everything look like shit. The reason they were used was because better display tech hadn't been invented yet, similar to how getting a signal to the tv changed from antennas you attached by tightening screws over metal antenna connectors to cable/RF modulator connectors, to composite RCA, to s-video, to component, to hdmi. Each stage becoming less and less shitty.

The Wii is an absolute pain in the ass. 480p CRTs are usually garbage but going LCD/OLED isnโ€™t ideal either due to the low resolution and large amount of 480i only titles.

It's not really about color balancing it's just a difference in how the technology works, CRTS have a non-translucent sheet with a cutout for each "pixel", this allows for perfect blacks. Any LCD screen you look at will look different when it's off vs when it's on and just a black screen because of the backlight. Since AMOLEDs cast their own light they aren't subject to the same backlighting problem and when they are black they are pure black with no light coming out of it. All other types of displays will get that dogshit blackwashing because of backlight, the traditional cost-effective solution to this is HDR but this works by controlling the backlight LEDs in clusters, thus, it still does not solve the problem because you cannot have perfect black scanlines which ruins the entire CRT effect.
And AMOLED is too expensive to make entire monitor or TV-sized displays at a mass-consumer level.

You hate to see it folks.
That being said, I'm pretty happy I still have my old CRT around. The extra color contrast looks great on some games.
Kinda wish it was less annoying to hook up to a modern GPU.
Maybe I'll get a dedicated secondary GPU with VGA/DVI hookups rather than using a dumpy HDMI to S-Video adapter I got online.

Yeah that's a bit of a non-issue now, even my laptop has a 480hz screen, and these games are so pathetically easy to run running them at a theoretical 480 FPS isn't even inconceivable, the real problem is good CRT Phosphorous shaders are relatively computationally expensive.

I have a 445 Pro which I am replacing because it canโ€™t do 15 kHz. I moved my 480p consoles+OSSC to my LG OLED. The fact that I needed to go analog->digital linedoubler->analog VGA for a CRT was just mindboggling and I wouldโ€™ve been better off with a consumer trinitron most the time.

There are literally only multiple threads because they keep trying to ban the game people actually give a shit about because it's getting in the way of Nintendo shit shilling.
And again, I know the implication is that they're "generals" but they're not and nobody even wants that.
They're leaving an obnoxious faggot from /vg/ in there in the hopes that it annoys people enough to stop talking about the game.

Recently set up my own little office in our spare room and dusted off my old childhood consoles. Coworker gave me this old CRT and for now it works. It's a TV with a SCART input using pic related as the in-between converter going from VGA to SCART. You need a particular graphics card for it to work, but luckily a lot of Radeon cards as well as AMD APUs are good for it. I have an R9 380 in this PC, which is way overkill for most things.

That's because CRTs are great for video games but not so much TV shows or movies. The same way "arcade-perfect" was a marketing tactic for a lot of games back then, "home cinema" was a common marketing buzzword for TV equipment. And how do you watch movies in a cinema? On a huge-ass projection surface with extremely poor contrast and color reproduction. People wanted big TVs, everything else be damned. Who plays games? Kids. Who watches movies? Their parents. Who makes decisions on what to buy and what to throw away? Also their parents. I have a small 15" CRT and image from my PS2 and Dreamcast looks gorgeous on it. I have one connected through RGB and the other through S-Video. CRT blurriness naturally smooths out rough pixel edges to a certain extent, hides the lack of detail on textures and makes FMVs looks very close to in-engine footage. Motion clarity is also great, as is input delay. Oh, and I don't have to worry about progressive modes. I can run all of my games interlaced because this is the type of display designed to display interlaced footage.

I think 20 inches+S Video or RGB is the sweet spot. PVMs will definitely look better, but it's up to you if the difference is enough to offset the cost. For most people the answer will be no.

That said, you've done the most important first step which is getting any set at all. This will stave off the temptation to do anything stupid with your money while you wait for your ideal set to come around.

Random TVs and monitors are available super cheap where I live, but again that's just random shit. If you keep trying you can probably get something decent, but something that is "known good" like Trinitron tubes or whatever the fuck are more rare and also priced higher.

>>713030892
No problem. If you can get a TV with SCART then it's pretty straight-forward since SCART and VGA are nearly the same, only the sync signal is different and that converter handles it. If you get something with component, S-Video or composite inputs only then you're going to need a different (and probably more expensive) converter.

Also FYI the software I'm running is called Batocera (a Linux distro), some people made a script you can run and it basically sets everything up automatically for CRT TV use. I'm sure you can probably get everything to work on any OS but it's likely going to be much more of a pain in the ass so I haven't really tried.

Its the color temperature. 92k is a lot more blue while 65k is a lot more red and green. 65k usually appears darker and is commonly used in TVs, 92k appears brighter and is usually used for computer monitors (though TVs in Japan were also commonly calibrated to it). If you know how to get into your monitor's OSD menu, it should tell you which one its set to.

Yeah I remember the 19" I got one Christmas being the sweet spot - had that through my teens until I shipped off for college. From what I'm reading up on, JVC and Sony have the guys I'm looking for in that size range, as long as they have component and s-video in the back.

I wont be looking to do output modding or anything extreme so I think I'll be satisfied with minimal fussing around. Seeing FB marketplace with trinitrons for like 250 nearby and that's not a problem to go for down the road.

I think the one snag I'm facing is that I'm not sure if I wanna limit myself to 4 consoles (which fit neatly with my space and storage options atm) out or go for all 5 between my PS2, Gamecube, 64, SNES, and Genesis and make some room for that to work.

Either way, Rogue Leader is so much harder than I remember. I think I've become retarded in my old age.

I'm learning woodworking, I'm going to the gym, I run 10ks a few nights a week.

I just ended up with no time and I think that all I want to do is sit and play my old Wii or Xbox but whenever I do I just feel a sense of dread like I'm wasting my life playing with a dead, old thing made for a generation of kids who are already out in the world doing something meaningful, why aren't I?

I just want to enjoy games but I can't anymore

So once you're in a flow state you use no visual input from the game at all? You solely play games you have completely memorized? You play every game constantly adjusting for how soon you ACTUALLY want to push the buttons? Nigger, if you have control over it, reducing input lag feels better, I don't care how much "flow" you have.

I got rid of my CRT only five years ago. I had it for almost 30 years, or since I was born.

Unfortunately, "those in power" wanted everyone to throw out our American-made TV sets so we could buy worse ones from China. They knew exactly what they were doing by moving broadcast TV to widescreen. NOTHING works on them anymore besides other vintage electronics.

Not natively. You have to use a converter to change the ATSC signal to the old NTSC standard. And even when you do, it just pushes all the TV tuner functionality onto the converter box, making the tube nothing more than a glorified monitor. So you either have to have two remotes (one for the tv and one for the box) or you need a universal remote with multiple modes so you can program it to both.
