desu I feel like people really overstate how similar the DQs are to each other because of remakes standardizing everything, the original versions of these games are quite distinct.

It really isn't until the tailend of the series where they start repeating themselves.

I've been playing through the DQ games chronologically and ever since I've played DQV it's lived in the back of my mind. It's a game I truly wish was released when it was supposed to in the west and I believe the landscape of gaming would've been a lot better for it.
I just finished 8 for the first time and while it was a very good game, DQV has been the best one so far.
personal rankings: V, IV, VI, VIII, VII, III, I, II.
So far, there aren't any bad games in the series, 1 and 2 are ya know...fine.
Played the gameboy remakes of the first 3, there are 2 apologists out there but I just think it's ok.
V has the best story.
IV has the best characters.
VI has some awesome ideas I wish was in a game that wasn't paced so weird. Like, it has the ingredients to be the best one but something about it just kinda falls flat.
VII and VIII, I don't have much to say, both solid B+ entries. People make VII out to be some "omg so long you have to be INSANE to play it!!!!" but it's only long, it's not like...difficult or something. VIII has that Level 5 games problem where it has like 50 endings before the game ends, so you're more ready for it to be over when it does.
I'm excited for IX and XI, it's been a great ride so far.
