It's one thing having a straight line from point A to point D (FFXIII). It's another being able to have point A to point D with B and C being optional things you can do between those points (FFX). Picking up Al Bhed primers, the cactuar sidequest when you get to Bikanel, clearing the extra puzzle in the temples before moving on (or going back to them). Not only that, but there's a ton of reasons to go back to every revisitable point in the game. FFVII is also just as linear until you get the Tiny Bronco and FFVI is just as linear until you get to WoR. Most of the series is linear, FFXIII just decided to be as linear as fucking Halo for some reason and we know now what level of linearity is too much for people.
tl;dr FFX is linear, FFXIII somehow is MORE linear
