>have little experience playing fighting games
>see sf4 on sale. decide to buy it
>play and try to learn Cody for 6 hours, manage to beat the cpu on hard
>decide to play ranked
>get matched with people with 1500+ PP/BP
>play 12 matches, get bodied in all of them

Should I bother learning fighting games or just waste my time in another genre?

1. You shouldn't it's a complete waste of time unless you have a friend you can actually play with.
2. Everyone still playing SF4 is going to be godly remember this is two SF ago a 15 year old game. You'd be far better off playing a new game probably.
3. Actually getting good is a huge time commitment especially if you are coming from 0 experience. You pretty much have to throw the idea of playing any other games out the window and dedicating lots of time to learning and grinding out the minutia of these games and that's just to be decent. It's a genre for people that are only going to play this genre and only like 3 games regularly.

tbf you shouldn't jump into fighters that are over a decade old and its remaining playerbase only consist of diehard pros. That's never a good time. Try to get into a recent fighter with a sizable playerbase so there's plenty of other casuals still trying to learn the game to match up against.

SF4 is a 15 year old game, so the people who play it aren't going to lose easily. they have a very broad knowledge of the options avalible to them. play with a friend i love sf iv i'd love to play and teach others to play

Playing old ass SF4 is why you got bodied
It's like hopping on Broodwar or Quake
Just about everybody leftover after all these years will have been playing since forever

This isn't necessarily a bad thing though, if you enjoy the challenge you'll eventually grow
The breakthrough moment of finally getting good enough to go toe-to-toe with them would undoubtedly be memorable

you should try to do the cody trials. you can have fun challenging yourself to do that without playing other players. It'll also give you a grip of what is possible and how your character can transition from one move to another in a fun and engaging way.

>fighting games
>learning
getting good at fighting games is a little bit like getting good at something like art. You should not be intimidated by people with more experience because if you have 'talent' you will leapfrog them in a fraction of the time anyway.

Even if you're not a natural, just knowing the right things and making a breakthrough in mindset will instantly advance you what would take hundreds of hours of mindless grinding. Improvement is not about the raw hours spent practicing at all.

also, playing against the CPU isn't really a good way to learn to play a fighting game. a real player will be trying to identify your weaknesses and adapting in a way that the CPU doesn't. You can also do the same against a human opponent.

This
I always set my own challenges and have fun even if I'm getting bodied.
Like if I know the opponents are generally better than me then I'm like 'if I can take down 50% of a clearly better player's HP then that's a win for me'. Meanwhile I'm also enjoying just getting better at the game

Idk man. I only play sf and I have 30 years experience. Its hard to get into without the right kind of people to learn the game with, no question. You better start at like 12 with your school friends who might also play. Starting at 30 as a wagie with no friends and only online would be pure suffering, I imagine.

The only people playing old fighting games have hundreds if not thousands of hours in them. They may not be good, or they may be willing to go easy on you, but they have years of knowledge over you. You should learn to set smaller goals and enjoy the gradual improvement if you want to play those games. If that's not interesting to you, either pick up the latest SF or find another genre.

sadly sf4 doesn't get new players so you're fucked until it gets rollback
fighting games are also a genre in which every franchise is at its worst right now, you play them in locals with your friends and that's when it's fun, as a competitive game you'll just be wasting your time
>next game comes out
>it's completely different and more braindead than the previous one
>sf6 is filled with reaction checks as if it was a mario party minigame of press the button when thing flashes
don't get me wrong, it's still *slightly* entertaining but it's just not worth playing
enjoy other genres and play the fighting games that you find appealing and see if it has a scene or get your friends to play it with you

Like this Anon said, playing with friends is the way to go with fighting games. Either find someone you know who is already familiar with the genre or get someone else to learn at the same pace as you. Playing against bots is immensely boring once you learn even the basics of a game, and playing online against randoms will likely make you frustrated or jaded with enough time.

Everyone on SF4 online are smurfs. Meaning they are experienced(or experienced enough) with knowledge with 0 points. New players players jumping into the game now will get slaughtered harder then when it was still active and new-ish.

Ssme will happen to SF5.

This is the realest post ITT. People think FG improvement is a slow, linear grind where you just have to stockpile hours, but it's not XP farming—it's more like solving puzzles. You hit walls until something clicks, and suddenly your whole game levels up. That "aha" moment where you finally understand spacing, or frame traps, or when to anti-air? Worth more than 50 hours of aimless matches. Grind smart, not long.

Doesn't matter what fighting game you pick up, expect to lose all of your matches for at least half a year. Each one just has so many layers of knowledge and skill required to play them. Just how it is.

Takes a long time to get mediocre unless you're gifted. Losing to betters should motivate you to build your skills and come back. I would recommend playing something more populated so that you aren't discouraged early on and then move back to the niche games with regular players as you still you need to build your fundamentals when just starting out.

The problem with fighting games is that unless you’re a complete sweatlord they’re only fun for the first few years after they release. Anything that’s 10+ years old is only going to have other players that do nothing but play that one game all day, so you’re never ever going to win unless you, for some reason, decide to also become a sweatlord for a dead game

SF4 is a great game but it's only being played by diehard oldheads these days and most characters are pretty execution-heavy to get their BnBs off. It's not a bad first game but only if you can find someone around your level willing to play it. If you want SF there's 6 which is the newest one and has more lower-level players, but if you want Cody he's not in 6 as of now but he is in V which is at least easier than 4.

The great thing about modern fighting games is that there are a lot more people playing them and online infrastructure has improved so much that you can find people at your level to challenge you to grow no matter how bad you are you when start.

Only problem is taking dogshit fighting game threads on /v/ so seriously that it clouds your ability to enjoy yourself.

SF4 has horrible matchmaking, so your best bet is to find locals or, more likely, a Discord server dedicated to the game to find lobbies. That's how most old fighters are.

4 is for playing with friends sometimes at locals or fucking around with in training. playing awful delay netcode with 5 other people who've been playing for a decade in 4 instead of playing near flawless rollback with thousands of people in your exact skill range in 6 is a choice you could only arrive to from being manipulated by vee shitposting from people who don't play either game

The loop of online matches, and practice mode with Kolin, was really fun during those few years.

After I stopped smoking weed though its not as fun, I'd rather play another genre.

4 is worth it for Omega Mode, Hakan, and the most fun iteration of Poison (fuck that shit they did to her in V, I want my rekka and meaty fireball back). Only reason I'd go back to V is to lab Gill combos or jerk off to Chun/Menat.
