Thing is their older titles did more than the newer ones. NPC's actually walked and paced around in Demons Souls to new areas like Ostrava, they do none of that in Elden Ring. Instead they stand in one place and may die or disappear based on action outside your control. I feel like that would've alleviated all the complaints if they were physically shown moving from areas you left to and inside dungeons.

Its impressive how often FROM goes two steps forward, one step back in small ways like that.
Running the dialog behind the level up screen is a perfect solution. But they've done it wrong more times than they did it right.
Having to use a level up girl has also been a complete success, but they fuck that up too. Players love going to their girl and having her give them levels, even if its mechanically identical to just leveling up at a bonfire.
Melina should have been summoned every time the PC leveled up in Elden Ring, but they just totally missed such a simple way to ingratiate her to the player.

I agree, it was like a 6.5/10 at best. The map was cool but ultimately needed more in it, but that's a core issue with elden ring in general as a whole. It's ironic that elden ring would have benefited greatly from the normal interconnected level design but on a larger scale, maybe with SOME open areas to break up the areas somewhat.
