Jesus Christ is the vortigaunt village garbage.
The original Xen wasn't great but at least it didn't go on for 5 boring hours.

I liked the premise of the new aspects, xen wilds into village into their own black mesa/factory, but fuck me what were they thinking making it so laborious to play? The amount of do X 3 times doors as well was lazy level design.

The main issue was basically trying to rethink the things too much or too little and not having a more solid reference to go off of and the team not being experienced enough to pull it off. They did good for everything else but Xen is just divisive with how it did things better and worse.

(no offence to the dev team behind it) if you're going to create your first major game and it's a remake of someone else's established work (that didn't even need a remake in the first place) then you're already a hack by definition. What did you expect? The devs behind this obviously thought that out of all the things half life was missing, it was a holywood movie.

The ZEn in remake is the biggest "missed the point" and "flew over my head" situation ever. It's an actual case of completely missing the artistic intention of... everything. And a lack of talent of course, and creativity.

I remember it feeling like a slog at times but overall I really enjoyed the xen levels. Particularly all the Gonarch levels are permanently etched into my brain. What a fun fight.

It's not even like that. It's Earth who shoots first, and the Nihilanth retaliates in horror. Xen is a borderworld and the Nihilanth is trying to hide from G-Man/the Combine/whatever, which is why he attempts to communicate with the player in the first place. He doesn't want to invade Earth, he wants to be left the fuck alone, but the Resonance Cascade happened, and its consequences are creating portals between Earth and Xen randomly. I'm not saying the Nihilanth isn't sending troops to Earth, but he isn't on the offensive either.
