What was the last unique feeling game you played?
Something that made you think hmm there really isn't anything else like this.

For me I think it was Pikmin.
I'm sure there's more but either I never find them or they get buried in a wave of the metric ton of trash released every day but Pikmin is the last memory I have of feeling like I'm experiencing something I haven't in any game before.

Really?
I actually never played minecraft because it never appealed to me visually but I guess the concept must've been somewhat novel.
It's like those old falling sand simulation games but 3d I guess, I don't really know.

Itโ€™s probably harder to appreciate minecraft since so many games these days will incorporate the ability to manually alter the terrain and buildings of the world when they donโ€™t even need it but Minecraft really was groundbreaking even still within its alpha and beta

Maybe those System Erasure studio's weird indie games, although they play more like oldschool genre X, with a twist.

Minecraft literally has no world physics, SANS for the sand blocks that were added much later. It's like old Worms games, where everything just floats in the air.

There should be a game with an isekai gimmick where the characters from the inner world have magic, can double jump etc but the characters from the outer world move ponderously like Geralt and get tired and hurt easily without the assistance they get from the magical shit they find.

Translation: "I never played it lol! :^)"

Demon's Souls is THE original, THE acclaimed game that not only spawned the ""genre"", not only made shit like DaS even happen, but also still is the best FROM game they've made. And it was extremely popular, essentially a symbol for the anti-casual trash movement that had been brewing for years at that point.

The only reason "nobody" played it (as if people from States and EU weren't importing it from Japan months before the official releases) is because it was a PS3 exclusive, where as DaS was a multiplat rehash since day 1.

I tried playing demon's souls after dark souls but it felt like shit.
I breezed through it very easily, the levels were super short and the bosses were all just shitty gimmicky fights without any actual challenge.
The only real fight there was flamelurker and even that was piss easy.
It felt like a weird bad tech demo to set the ground for the sequel that improved on it in every way.

Noita - I don't know other games which expect you to brake the game and use exploits to earn some of the achievements. The game is unfair and you are expected to cheat in return. Same company made Crayon Physics which I played about a decade ago - it's great

Papers, please - I watched a let's play a bit and thought "Who would want to play this?". I tried it myself and it became my second job for a time. Made by the same guy who made Return of the Obra Dinn btw

OP, if you like Picmin, check out Overlord if you haven't already. Slightly different but uses minions to solve puzzles

Also it will be better for modding, probably able to run at 120fps at least and will likely add the option to play with keyboard+mouse controls.

Some games I have been playing within the last few years which stuck out to me
>Loop hero
Not really an idle game and not really an RTS either
>el shaddai
painterly artstyle hasn't been done since. Played in once on LSD.
>Killer7
Really nothing at all like it. First-person on-rails survival horror?
>cruelty squad
even though the game is basically just first-person MGS/hitman
>Lisa the painful
a JRPG but it's a side-scroller and even has some rudimentary platforming
>MGSV
Fusion of open-world and stealth was novel. Liked how you could influence missions before you start them by blowing stuff up in the open-world, how the AI adapted to your playstyle and if you went full-stealth you could throw them off. FOB meta game was absolutely nuts and I wish I could see more stuff like that. I hear Dune Legacy does something similar? Probably the only stealth game that is also an immersive sim.
>Disco Elysium
As much as I ended up hating it, had some novel ideas.
>Moon Remix RPG Adventure.
One of a kind and hasn't been matched since.
>Chaos Seed
dungeon keeper before dungeon keeper meets Chinese mysticism
>Ena dream BBQ
the only tolerable weirdcore game that isn't trannyshit
>Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri
tactical mech fps where you have a little drone that can scout ahead. Janky and very cool.
>crypt worlds
trannyshit weirdcore game about pissing, actually quite funny but best not to indulge the dev too much
>dreamwild
roguey fps meets talky jrpg

Probably Legend of Mana.
I've never seen a game that lets you make the world yourself.
You get different "items" by beating stages that each turns into its own unique stage in the overworld, so you can get like puzzle blocks and plop them on the world map and it will turn into a dungeon with a boss, or another might turn into a city with NPCs.
And based on how they're connected to each other you get various perks.

Never seen anything else like it.

Exactly. Pikmin has more in common with a resource management adventure game than any traditional RTS. The intimacy with the environment, the emotional attachment to your pikmin, the day-cycle time pressureโ€”itโ€™s basically a melancholic survival puzzle game masquerading as a cute strategy title. Itโ€™s about efficiency, micro-scale decision making, and moment-to-moment exploration. Command & Conquer doesn't make you feel guilty for losing a soldier to a drowning.

Pikmin 2 inserting actual brands into the game sold the immersion. You felt like a visitor to Earth. With the silly treasure names like calling the Duracell battery "Courage Reactor", it's clear Olimar is trying to figure out what the true purpose of such an "alien" object could be.

The story and the world are fantastic actually after it opens up past disc 2, you're missing out.
The bosses all got very creative too, it took me multiple tries to beat a lot of them so it's not piss easy at all.

It's very different from the first 2 but it still delivers on the amazing alien planet feel of them and the spectacle is still there in big boss fights.

I think Legend of Mana is so cool, but for whatever reason I just always find myself stopping halfway through. I could always find a guide or try to talk to everyone to figure out what to do, but the amount of areas eventually feels overwhelming. Plus combat is fairly simplistic in my opinion. Still, I can't deny that it's so nice to explore its world, the music is really good, and the visuals are fantastic.

I would advise against using a guide and just going wherever it takes you.
But yeah it can feel like a lot eventually, but you're not really meant to find every event and figure out every mechanic, hell you can spend the entire game going without crafting a single weapon or raising a single pet and on the opposite you can spend the entire game grinding and crafting the omega ultimate god killer weapon that one taps every boss not even half way through.
It gives you so many avenues to do random shit you want and you can choose to engage with it or not.

The japanese version had diffrent product placement. The duracells were instead a japanese brand of battery, there was a shocking amount of milk bottle caps from every brand under the (rising) sun, and several other treasures were japanese brand names subbed out for western and/or generic equivalents in the western versions. But the basic concept is the same.

remember to play Pikmin Squared if you get the hankering to replay Pikmin 1 at any point
avoid the shitty re-releases that add in more bugs and censorship

It's unreal that Hideo invented the horror game genre as a pilot for his next game.
La Creatividad does it again.

I was thinking about this recently and I believe that Sunset Overdrive was the last time I played a game and thought "oh I've never seen that before" which is sad given how long it's been.

I wonder why a studio has never tried to develop anything like Pikmin 1. Maybe it's too difficult to make something like it?

They made more of them, what do you mean.
There's like 4 games + spinoffs.

It's because so few people have played it, sadly. PC port didn't help. But it will always be the game I'm happiest I went to the trouble to emulate. I don't know if it's the most unique game I've played though. It is kinda like Pikmin meets a certain classic Zelda title. But I do like it more than almost every Pikmin game except for Pikmin 2. LKS does have my favorite boss of all time with King TV Dinnah. I got a friend to try playing it this year and he just beat Shishkebaboo.

Beaten the first two Panzer Dragoon games this month, I'm mad excited to try this game out when I can. Ive been absolutely loving Zwei and I can tell a lot of the questions I have regarding its story will have one answer or another in Saga.
