I think Umbral Soul is a pretty good game. One of the very, very few RPGs where you actually have to employ tactics for different bosses more than just Charge + Party Wide Heal + Attack spam and it actually takes the time to build up all the characters on a personal level.

None desu. Fear & Hunger is a "bad on purpose" game like Drakengard 1. A curiosity, but miserable to actually play.
MGQ almost won the 2011 GOTY, but really it kind of aged badly. MGQ:P is genuinely good if you're into job systems though (FF5, Bravely Default, Crystal Project).
Black Souls 1 is only notable for its twist ending. Black Souls 2 is the game everyone is praising, not BS1.

Demons Roots gets compared to a lot of SNES and PS1 JRPGs and it's like 50 hours long.
It's not the most mindblowing RPG Maker game on the gameplay department but it's well balanced and an actual RPG and not a glorified walking sim/not a glorified visual novel.

Some people say it's overrated but if you're looking for a traditional JRPG that doesn't try to reinvent the wheel but has a really cool plot with twists and turns it's one of the better RPG Maker games in that regard.

Interestingly, many normal RPG Maker games that aren't surrealist or horror or literal porn do exist. The issue is that nobody ever talks about them. I suspect this is mainly because the type of person to play RPG Maker games is either not too familiar with traditional turn-based games or just sees the engine as a way to make a streamlined narrative experience.

Regardless, I dislike Space Funeral. I think it's an interesting concept but its final message is very mean-spirited and the dev went on to make far better games.

the basic jrpg combat formula is extremely hard to get right and make actually fun, which is why so many games mix it up with other stuff nowadays. It's easier to basically disregard it than to try to hone jrpg combat and you can't do much to spice it up in rpgmaker so it being disregarded is the standard. Only rpgmaker game I've played as of now with good combat is LISA because it works well as an extension of the brutal resource management
