You're missing the part where people for some insane reason spend absurd amounts of money on the Helix Store for equips and skins. Odyssey and Valhalla both made unholy sums of money from that with Valhalla making something like a billion one year? They also didn't sell blockbusters in terms of game sales if I remember right, but made it up in the store sales. So in terms of raw sales it's pretty bad but I have no doubt some whales are perpetually keeping them alive.
I don't have a screenshot of the price of the Destiny collab items when they were added to Valhalla (I think it was like $30-35?), but here is the Monhun collab and it's $20. They're also insidious because they give you a bit of free currency that is not enough to buy anything at all but close enough to entice you to buy the skins which is how they get the whales and weak willed hooked. You can see I have 300 that I got when I started the game.
