So the game key cards don't actually have the game on them. Instead they're physical DRM, and that DRM has to be linked to a Switch so you can download the game.

Now, if you load the DRM onto your Switch, and then take that Switch offline, the server can no longer de-auth the DRM key so the physical DRM becomes a paperweight, at least until you bitch to Nintendo that the physical DRM you bought doesn't work and they charge you 60 bucks to reset the key.

This isn't a game key card thing as this is Smash Ultimate, which was before that system existed.
What's actually happening is that the person use the virtual card system to lend the game to another person, and are trying to get it back, which needs the other system to give it away.
I think games are automatically returned after 2 weeks anyway so even if the other system never goes back online you'll still have it back eventually.

Does the Switch now just always require an internet connection to check if it can play the game it already has loaded, or is this specific situation an outlier?
