crash 1 was never a good game, it was a pretty game for 1996 and one of the better looking 3D PS1 games due to the forced perspective. I don’t know when the idea of it being a great game to play started, no one ever thought that back in the day.

Crash 1 is the best because it emphasizes the core mechanics of Crash and doesn't over rely on gimmickshit that adds little to the gameplay. And it easily has the best level design, it's not even close.
