They would've been fine if they had released a portable PS4 back in 2022 or even 2023, now it's too late. The handheld market is saturated and they won't be able to compete with Microsoft's Play Anywhere program... Those might sell to new adopters in the ecosystem but I think people are legitimately sticking with MKW and their old updated games until DK comes out and then they'll probably go back to MKW and their old games until MP4 comes out.

Part of the issue is that early adopters at this price point will be either hardcore gamers or hardcore Nintendo fanboys and the former have played all these ports and the latter aren't really interested in them because they aren't first party Nintendo games. The casuals that make up the bulk of the third party sales haven't shown up yet.

The thing about third party games on the Switch is that they do actually sell pretty well there IF they are day 1 releases and are fully on the cart (see Unicorn Overlord, every Sonic game, Monster Hunter Rise, etc)

You can get 2 months out of the multiplayer easily and eventually there will be DLC released to bring people back to it. The original Switch was a console everyone already had, so of course they'd want to buy additional games for it. It was a big platform third parties could use to reach new players.
