They actually weren't easy to replace, at all. It took years of research and massive campaigns to regulate companies into using them.
They're not even as good. The new replacement for R-22, Freon. It's inferior to R-22 in every way, shape, and form in terms of cooling. But it doesn't make a big hole in the sky so we just live with the reality that air conditioners and freezers suck now compared to 40 years ago

Same will have to happen with electronics and your video games.

To put it in perspective, R-22 was so energy efficient that the dinky little air conditioner in your car was capable of making ice crystals on the vents in the middle of the hottest summer. R-438A is lucky if it can make ~5 degree C/40 degree F air in the middle of winter.
