Loading up a game where the community is dead or down to a few hardcore jaded lifers is a much worse experience in most cases. My only experience with day 1 game was Elden Ring. My job was temporarily gone, banned on 4chan for a bit, and didn't have much to do. I did about 80-90% of the game without guides telling me. I got the two halves you need to proceed through the elevator just from the sheer amount of exploring I did, beat bosses without guides, found secrets I didn't think I would. Overall it felt nice having the game be all mine.

Then I realized I do that anyways with games that have been out.

A lot of comments are saying fomo but I don't think that's the main reason. The main reason is thinking is too much hassle.
They could bookmark the game and look through all of the list and decide what year old game to play but that's a lot of games a lot of choices and a a lot more thinking then just looking at recently released, talked about, or seen game in their life and thinking that looks fun to play now.
A person that's too picky about their games will barely play while someone that has easier taste will play a lot more.
I say this as someone that does bookmark many games to wait for dlc/patches, that does check pcgamingwiki for essential improvements, that does make sure that he gets the latest version from he's completely legitimate store. Do not overthink playing vidya, it's meant to be fun.

If I buy a game soon after it releases, it's because I can play it before I'm potentially killed by unfortunate circumstances. More than 3 people die every minute across the globe from "unnatural" causes.
