Somewhat true. However, you do miss out on the hype and community of playing a game at launch. Loading up a game where the community is dead or down to a few hardcore jaded lifers is a much worse experience in most cases. If you're playing the new hotness, there will usually be friends and coworkers who are also playing it, who you can talk about the game or play with.

Good question. I've always been a cheap ass and wait for sales on games UNLESS I plan on playing it as soon that day.
Usually 90% of the time this only applies to fighting games where the community is all on the newest version.

My only experience with day 1 game was Elden Ring. My job was temporarily gone, banned on 4chan for a bit, and didn't have much to do. I did about 80-90% of the game without guides telling me. I got the two halves you need to proceed through the elevator just from the sheer amount of exploring I did, beat bosses without guides, found secrets I didn't think I would. Overall it felt nice having the game be all mine.

Then I realized I do that anyways with games that have been out.

A lot of comments are saying fomo but I don't think that's the main reason. The main reason is thinking is too much hassle.
They could bookmark the game and look through all of the list and decide what year old game to play but that's a lot of games a lot of choices and a a lot more thinking then just looking at recently released, talked about, or seen game in their life and thinking that looks fun to play now.
A person that's too picky about their games will barely play while someone that has easier taste will play a lot more.
I say this as someone that does bookmark many games to wait for dlc/patches, that does check pcgamingwiki for essential improvements, that does make sure that he gets the latest version from he's completely legitimate store. Do not overthink playing vidya, it's meant to be fun.

Because I'm not poor and won't deny myself something I want now in order to save $20

If I buy a game soon after it releases, it's because I can play it before I'm potentially killed by unfortunate circumstances. More than 3 people die every minute across the globe from "unnatural" causes. A good portion of them are Indian, but it could be you or me any day, especially as western nations continue to commit developmental suicide by importing thirdies by the hundreds of thousands every year.
