performative gamers play 20ft away from their tvs. usually a mid-tier lcd without full array local dimming, or a poorly calibrated OLED with c20 color temp connected to the internet. or multiple monitors. they have their rgb range and black levels to auto-auto instead of limited-low. have +10 games installed. play 2 hours a day. they share on twitter-reddit every new game they play

they played the witcher 3 in 2020. bloodborne in 2018. death stranding after the plandemic. rdr2 before rdr1. hate GTAO. love elden ring. love clair obscur. shilled baldur's gate 3. prefer persona 5 royal over vanilla. prefer path of exile over diablo 2. they lose their shit for gta vi but get mad when you ask them why.
/v/ is full of them, btw.

In very simple terms:

1) Most TVs are factory calibrated at 4:4:4 (which is always Limited) before shipping. So targeting RGB Full would require a new in-place calibration as just changing general settings won't be enough to get an accurate picture

2) The reason is that all Movies and the vast majority of Games are also mastered/created with that target or "Legal video range" as well

3) RGB Full is only leveraged by PC/Windows desktop, web browser, professional graphics applications and PS5 dashboard, but these are TVs and not monitors (that's why they choose 4:4:4 for the factory calibration)

4) There are known issues with the "Auto" Black Level setting on these TVs which sometimes does not work as intended and cause Black Levels mismatches (e.g. PS5 on Auto will correctly auto switch from RGB Full in SDR to RGB Limited in HDR, but the TV in Auto will keep Black Level to High, causing the mismatch with crushed blacks or viceversa)

For all these reasons it's better to always stick to Limited/Low with these TVs, both at TV level AND device level as well.
