I hope you didn't start in 4B mode, it's a noob trap. It's hard to move to other button modes because it's the only mode where people usually use the index fingers for middle notes, middle fingers for edge notes and the ring fingers for side notes.

Keyboard is what the devs recommend. There's even an official mechanical keyboard made by Ducky. Also, all the charts up to MX difficulty are playable on gamepads.
