Yeah my roguelike is dead isnt it
havent worked on it for ages
so I guess I will do the moo clone then
here are my game design ideas so far
1. simplify micromanagement of planets greatly
2. make space combat much quicker and real time
3. make tech tree choices less convoluted
4. make diplomacy and strategical expansion the most critical parts of the game
5. allow playing much more evil with bio weapons, slave and drug trade etc.
6 give each race a unique ultimate technology

>>713159097I have a dungeon crawler in mind, so style is more important than usual. Iโm making sprites just for fun and to make mockup screenshots, trying to dial back any grand ambitions for now. Anything in particular I should know about sprites to make them more authentic outside of following tile size and a palette? I know that technically a character might need to be broken up into multiple tiles that are 8x8 or 16x16 that are considered sprites while the character itself is the object. Iโd be delighted to contribute to someoneโs indie project someday as a guy doing the art assets. I think im a pretty decent artist, but I know thereโs likely details Iโm overlooking when it comes to having sprites be functional.
how do you make levels for a shootem up?
do you put triggers on the ground and when they're passed the encounter is turned on?

UIs and Menus are not those things. I want to fucking die.
>>713165318Yeah. I have like 26 or 27 concepts Iโve jotted down so far and writing down game mechanics because I donโt want to forget them and it keeps me sane. Most concepts I get hit hard and fast and come all at once. I could talk about any one of em, but to not spam the thread or take away from the spirit of actual development, Iโll keep what I post to sprites for now and hope theyโre good enough or the fit for a dev who can actually program to ask me to take that next step. I just love games, man, I could talk all day about mechanics and art direction and so on. I wish there could be threads in /v/ where people just shoot the shit on genres and whatโs great about them and what needs improvement or what could be fun to see, Iโd never leave /v/ again.

So i torrented some retarded movie at the same time working on a small gamejam game. I saved the scene in the Godot at the time, when there were no free space on my harddrive. What Godot do is basically this:
>every object that is on the current scene gonna be saved on a new file and overwritten>oops, there are no place for a file bigger than 1 byte>OK, I just gonna overwrite all old files with these new empty files And I was just flabbergasted as 2 weeks of "work" go down in drain in a second.
What helped me was my obsession with exporting game every day and uploading it on itch.io just to test the current build, so I wouldn't get into a situation when it's a deadline and game is too big to run into a browser (HTML5).
So i downloaded my last build, and run Godot_Recovery_Tools, it decompile my own game back into Godot readable thingy.

Has there been any update from that guy who was begging for people to make his furry game for him?
>>713157914What is your dream game you want to make?
My code is kinda growing to uncomfortable size. Can't wait to finish current feature so I can back it up and start refactoring.
Working on Online Tag/Hide and Seek mode, adding stuff that will make it more enjoyable. When you're it, you get a yellow outfit and a yellow area around you that when other players step in, they become it. When you do your baseball bat attack, it now briefly extends your area of effect a lot. If you're a seeker, I also added an arrow that always points toward the nearest non-seeker if you've stopped moving.
I think all these together have made the mode a lot more fun, and made it so the seekers have a chance. Also, I was using one controller for all four instances, so that's why movement is so wonky.
More sprites just for fun, so far this has taken roughly forty-five minutes.
These would be for a side-scrolling shoot em up called "Midas". The idea was that your ship can graze enemy shots or maybe even enemies themselves to turn them into gold, which could then be thrown into other enemies for combos where they all become gold, and the player gathers the gold pieces to add to their score. The Midas ship could shoot, of course, at four different levels of power, without the need for collecting power-ups, but there would be a catch - your score is your ammo, and the more powerful your shots, the more points it costs. The player would always have access to a basic shot, but it would be weak and have half a screen-length of range. Midas would also be able to grab select enemies and objects indicated with a certain palette or maybe it can flash, hold them, and then throw them back or drop them onto other enemies or against walls to destroy them.
Ideally, there would be four ships with four uniquely designed hands for difficulty. Easy mode is Talos (bronze), normal is Artemis (silver), hard is Midas (gold), and then maybe super hard could be something like Pluton (platinum). Then there's the idea of the hand maybe being able to grind against the bottom of the stage to gather materials to throw, like snow for a snowball, or a static charge to zap enemies for a limited time. Or hell, what if the hand could snatch at and tear off parts of a mid-boss or boss' armor to make it vulnerable to shots? Who the fuck knows, it's stuff like this that I can't let go and have to make art for or else it just eats me up inside.
>>713186690That's super cool. I have some replication going on in my game but while attacks work and damage is replicating, armor and weapons aren't and it looks really funny.
Is your client based or server based?
>>713131364Post it. I'll wishlist and preorder.

>>713187119Both. You can host a server that is stand alone, but I also have it where you can be the host and play at the same time. It's all roll-back, either way, so you won't see any lag on your gameplay side.
>>713181303I've spent a day on it.
Performance is not a problem, but it's not working out anyways, those round cutouts on the bottoms of the beams makes the top too clean looking. Going to do square plates welded across beams to make the main truss for better greebling and bake in the bolts into the texture.

what i mean by level based is something like doom where you can drop in and out of levels as opposed to a standard rpg where progress is mandatory and linear.

Just mod them in if the devs don't implement it. Your demanding shit is literal nigger "gibs me dat", doing the work yourself is always the more enlightened path.
>>713191593engine is irrelevant to artstyle
any 3d engine can do that.
>>713191290>with items like Mario kartsounds neat! keep us posted man

>>713192085>wasting time and effort implementing censorshiphow is leaving something as a black void supposed to take more time and effort than meticulously sculpting a pair of underwear?
unless you buy a model someone else made, in which case the soul argument is pointless

>>713192515What exists BEHIND the black void in this scenario, dumbass? Answer the question.
>>713192621Just don't model anything under the skirt? Do you not understand how 3D models work? Do you think you just tell AI to make a model and it models it? Lmao.
>>713192621It takes seconds up to 1 minute to make a few faces and a black texture under a skirt, compared to minutes to an hour for thighs panties as well as UV unwrapping and texturing.
You will have your black void underskirts and you will be happy.
>>713192780>>713192841why do you NEED to model and texture it all? why not just leave it there? The black void looks like dogshit anyways so you can't cope that it's about aesthetics
literally just leave it there, barren and empty barbie doll shit with no textures, what's the matter? It's not like you care if it looks good since you're already shilling for the ugly void
>>713192970Because I'd get a billion bug reports about textures not rendering if you leave them empty.
Clearly, you don't make games.
>>713191405I still want to do it, but for now I'm setting my sights lower and practicing making sprites. Also decided to pivot away from Unity and try Game Maker instead. If it's good enough for UFO 50, it's good enough for whatever game I'd wanna make since all of my concepts so far are basic arcade or action games. I plan on G-Man only having five missions, but those would be very detailed setpieces that would require a lot of unique tiles and objects, and I would want to do those in a way that are cartoonish, but are rendered with a limited palette in a way that provides the game with the right atmosphere. I'm studying other games' assets on Spriters Resource to see how I might need to break up the environments to make sure they're perfectly aligned with tiles.
The five levels' main setpieces would be...
1) A fancy hotel where G-Man would have just five minutes to travel between multiple floors and find walkie-talkies that give off word balloons for hints on an assassin's location before a foreign business mogul is shot.
2) A fish processing plant on the coast where drugs are being smuggled, including a big boat G-Man climbs up and infiltrates to gather evidence and progress into the plant.
3) The streets and rooftops of a city a lot like downtown San Francisco.
4) The deep woods and river rapids and rocky cliffs where a cult is, complete with a forest fire sequence near the end.
5) Inside a large UFO and then on the terrain of an alien planet, the aliens having abducted the president.
It would be a LOT of work, but worth it if I can pull off the atmosphere.
I hecking love game development.

>>713193254You're onto something. I could leave it empty to get even less triangles on my model.

So my friends and I are in the middle of developing a game, we're probably 8 months out from a final build. The game is a fairly small in scope RPG
I did all the pixel art but I don't think it's up to standard
How much would I need to pay for a good artist to work 1-2 months to fix up my art?
>>713194409might be a good idea! I'll try that
Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)
Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."
Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

I've been using Godot, but it really sucks. Thinking of switching to Unity, though I'm not sure how it is with text adventure games. If I was at all artistic I'd make it an actual RPG instead of just text based.
Working title is Feral Forrest. You start out as a knight entering the ruins of a great city that is over grown by a forest. You main objective is to end the curse on the people who have all turned into monsters and animals. Also they all want to fuck you and the more you get fucked the more feral you'll become. And if you've become too corrupted you won't be able to stop the curse.

>>713198964IT work is very draining. I like to balance it with drawing on weekdays and then do the coding on the weekend. Also take a walk during your break and after work, it clears your head better than just rest.
>>713199236>RPG Maker 2000 or 2003 is able to do thisPeople that ask "can you do x" on any engine are retarded. In rpgmaker 2000 and 2003, even if there isn't scripting, you can do a loop, number variables and display pictures. With that you can do literally anything, its more than enough to make any kind of game, from "3D" stuff like doom to full blown RTS. Ofc it isn't recommended for this kind of stuff, but you can do it quite easily with a little bit of creativity.
Any major engine like Unity and Godot will be 100% easier though.
>>713129246 (OP)I'm currently upgrading an older MMORPG whose source is available to x64 and dx10/11, as well as completely rebuilding its core identity, does that count?

>>713189650This but unironically.
>>713179676From the looks of it it's just a scene transition with animation. You could technically does picture-by-picture transition into the battle scene. Just make an animation in whatever program you like (unity, blender etc), record it, turn it into a gif and use a plugin in rpg maker to import it into your scene. Then just set the battle scene's background to be the same as the last frame of the gif.

Is there anything stopping me from mapping the single color UVs to a single pixel in the texture? For example does a flat white wall need a UV mapped to anything more than a single white pixel in the texture? started working on a conversation system for the npcs. Changes text color depending on who's talking and the npcs can play animations during conversations. Still have to decide what to do with the camera, maybe focus it right in the middle of the space between the player and the npc?

Should I feel bad or how to avoid feeling like shit when you take inspiration from another thing, another indie. I love Marathon but I also loved the citadel games, I wanna take inspiration from some mechanics but you know I don't want to....

>>713216919To me I say near the npc's head because you're the actor instigating the interaction to another actor. The goblin is who you want to talk to, but that's just my vision on npcs in general. If you're interaction is static and always in that same place and you want to enhance it how you mentiond i think that will be ok.
