Portal 1 has self awareness to know it's not much more than a low budget side project, it gets in, gets out, and doesn't overstay its welcome. It doesn't spend hours making the same joke that 2 does (WOW CAVE JOHNSON IS WAAAACKY), at most it brings up cake frequently only to drive home that Glados is an AI that is programmed to appeal to humans without actually knowing how humans act.

Sure, the fandom is gay as shit. But the game isn't retroactively ruined by it, because the game was developed without appealing to the fans.
