It's okay but too limited and it gets old after a while. They really need a better frontend that can manage stats and randomization in the background. Sillytavern is just too limited in what it does.

For example say you connect this to a koboldcpp backend, it is basically just sending your character card data strait through split into a few different sections.
So I could make a character card that simulates a D&D style setting, but because the prompt has no greater high level plot concept, it is just going to have boring random shit happen with no consistency unless I force it along which breaks the immersion.
What it really would need to do is run several prompts in the background. One to write a basic story outline, some to generate locations with specific items etc, store those off into separate files, then only pull them in when they are relevant and track any changes I make to them.

They try some of that with lorebooks but it is too limited, somebody really has to put some effort into creating a frontend that can manage everything together and consistently. You need a combination of more conventional programming along with the creativity the ai prompts can add and right now nothing does it well.

To tie this more back to games, both Skyrim and Fallout have mods where you can connect to a backend like koboldcpp, and similar to SillyTavern character cards you can craft a personality for each character that will be loaded when you talk to them in the game and they will respond based on that. Interesting as a concept but at the moment too limited. I expect it will eventually be the standard for "radiant" flavor type dialog though once someone can create a smooth system for managing it all.

I don't really enjoy the "chat" format. I much prefer writing a story and having the AI sometimes insert or extend passages.

I feel like people who struggle with or dislike talking to others should be the top users of LLMs. It’s like having training wheels - you can say the dumbest things, and the character will respond accordingly. Load up an uptight teacher card and tell her you find her lessons boring or even retarded, and hilarity ensues.
Besides, it’s not just about talking - you can *do* anything during the RP. Some of my sessions still haunt me because I really didn’t need to take that route "just to see what happens". Because AI can fucking pick anything up and twist that even harder.

You need to make sure that you use the Summary function to keep shit in context. Also helps to update your lorebook entries, so that specific things for a given character remain in context. There are some other tools to help with that kind of stuff as well. It's all about making sure that relevant information gets loaded into the context, without overloading the context. That's why VRAM is so important.

It's a cognitive sink, the bots are wholly obedient, almost completely passive, anything you input will be met with unconditional agreeableness, and anything you don't like can be undone, redone and edited as you please (more often you're doing it because the bot's response is hallucinating nonsense that barely registered your prompt at all). Whatever language model and frontend you provide for it, no matter how much processing power and tokens and time to generate you give to it, it will pull from a relatively limited library. You'll sometimes see a chatbot produce something interesting, but that's often only because whomever wrote the bot was actually a good writer and provided a rich persona, lore and objectives that give the bot something to cook with. But after the bot goes through those paragraphs of content, completes whatever goals it may have in its instructions, it gradually dumbs itself down, looping back on itself, pulling from the language model, and waiting for you to explicitly tell it what to do (which it will do poorly and quickly forget no matter how much you try to make it remember). At that point, you'll feel like you're dealing with a dependent dementia patient.
