It's because it did the combination of it all well enough that hundreds of games have outright copied it since, hence a lot of the "Bamham combat" complaints people had in that generation following its release.

the story with combine taking over the earth was always pretentions nonsensical dogshit (although I liked episode 1). HL is new mexico desert, black mesa and xen, not urban blighted moscow from 2005 with "le complex high iq soap opera"

also RTS genre is a western thing as well, and no one would argue that it's not deep or engaging (unless you are tlow iq brainlet)

It's like they were making Half Life 2 for some pretentious faggots who had never played an FPS in their lives, because any good FPS expansion ADDS weapons. HL2 already slimmed down the weapons beyond the basics of Opfor and even HL1, but then they don't add anything to the episodes? What the fuck?

This is not a multiplayer game where you need to worry about balance considering you can just save anywhere anyway. Add some variety to the weaponset.
