The DRM, pricing, and its positioning against other handhelds makes it less unique this time around than the original Switch. The other thing is that it doesn't need good reviews to sell out. Its been my experience that journalists highlight products they deem worthy of giving a push to so they can spotlight it.

Clair Obscur is an example of this. Great game, but it didn't have a huge company behind it and benefited quite a bit from a push from the gaming press.

Nintendo on the other hand is the industry leader and they have a fairly high priced upgrade which is similar to their last and a good amount of controversies to go along with it. That said, I bought Switch 2 and love it so far.

I'd only consider it an 8 if you're a PS+ subscriber of the higher tier, but that was only a recent addition where you can stream directly from Sony's servers, not at launch a year ago when the thing came out.

Consider the context of the Switch 1. Nintendo bombed during the Wii U era and everybody just wanted to see them back. Nintendo earned a lot of goodwill with their games over the years and the Switch seemed like a genuinely novel concept for a console at the time. Everyone wanted it to succeed so journos were kind to it.

The context is different for the Switch 2. Greedy/arrogant Nintendo is back and the goodwill people feel is soured by article after article of anti-consumer Nintendo shenanigans. The concept of a high powered gaming handheld that can be docked to a big screen is no longer novel and from a pure hardware POV other people have done it better (software is a different story). Plus if you're a big hitter like IGN you know you're relatively safe from the blacklist.

Game journalists have historically had something of a rollercoaster relationship with Nintendo than with any other company, regardless of whether they deserve the praise or ire. That said, IGN is the same company that gave God Hand an abysmal score while giving literal shovelware better marks, and Nintendo themselves haven't released a lot of worthwhile software for their new autism machine yet.
