There's a reason one of the first things Bamco added to Nioh for the sequel was character creation. Games with preset protagonists (especially ARPGs) have a lower profit ceiling. Even more so if they're genderlocked. I won't touch Path of Exile because all the classes have preset appearances and are genderlocked but I put 400 hours into Lost Ark and at least a hundred into Diablo 3. And I'm gonna put another hundred into Lost Ark when Fem Paladin drops later this year/early next year.

I'm 100% serious. I'm nearing the end of Khazan, i was incapable of getting more than 3 or 4 bosses into both Nioh 1 and 2. Had to drop them both. Aside from everything just being overwhelming to fight, doing too much damage, and the stupid healing system, playing Nioh also feels like i'm constantly fighting the controls of the game itself, while Khazan flows nicely smoothly. There is nothing casual about Nioh. Sure, Khazan is hard, but it doesn't feel insurmountable like Nioh does.

I can understand why, but I'm curious to see what others think.

Real answer? Denuvo. Souls games, specially souls-Nioh(which was already a tweak on souls genre) hybrids specially are still a niche genre. Because Elden Ring was massively popular doesn't mean all the genre is mainstream. Souls games still need a lot of marketing to sell well. Some accept this and just release the game of Game Pass for word of mouth (Lies of P, Expedition 33), others like Khazam think people will find out the game by magic.

It honestly didn’t get any marketing and also the game is just too fucking hard. It’s harder than Lies of P. But the marketing was fucking dog shit. For some reason Microsoft had the marketing rights to the game but no one plays weeb shit on Xbawx. The other issue is that the game is really long. Even people like Maxishillion and Parken dropped the game to play EX33.

It sucks because it’s actually a really good game but there are these edge case issues it has that made people drop it despite it being very high quality. IMO I think Khazans biggest issue was being a narrative focused souls like but doing absolutely nothing with its story.

I LIKE the loot autism in Nioh 2. It's not 'bearable' it is actually something I like about the game, rather than something I tolerate because other things are good.
