I always thought mine was only so yellow because of how my grandparents used to chain smoke constantly in the early 2000s.
Are they just made that color by default?

If it ended there we never would've gotten the PS2 era, which, while not as high a peak, was still highly worthwhile. Of course, everything that came after that was a detriment.

The gray plastic discolors to gold over time due to the fire-retardant chemicals in its composition. It happens with nearly all plastics involved with electronics back in the day, most keyboards and monitors from the early 90s will be similarly yellowed. The only way to prevent it is by keeping it in a very dark place so UV light can't touch it.

Well, now that I know why it happens, I like it.
Reminds me of how patina or verdigris appears on copper.
If it's good enough for the statue of liberty, it's good enough for me.

that's probably it. was thinking of not yellowing my dreamcast because only some parts of the case are of material that yellows so it's weird. but i'm too lazy so it shall be what it is

PSX > PS2 > SNES in my mind. The PS2 has too many good games, even if the relative % of good games is low it's got more worthwhile games than any other system ever. But they're close. It's all good shit anyway, you can't go wrong with any of these. The SNES has some of my favorite games too.
A single isolated year in any of these system's lifespans had more good games than an entire generation's worth these days.

I'm not too mad about SNES, but I will never stop being mad about that.

I’d say peak started with the tail end of the NES and the start of the PC Engine before continuing with the SFC - offering a continuum between technical processes, visual presentation, how to who the games were marketed, and how they were integrated with the wider pop culture.
The PSX is something else entirely. Another world.
