Can I get a clear explanation regarding Asians and how they represent race/ethnicity in media? One on hand you got anime like Ghost in the Shell where its pretty straight forward. Then you have the slop where they get offended if you assume the blue eyed blond is European. Best explanation I have received is that they are just drawing Asian cat girls without the cat parts unless stated otherwise, which seems like cope.

Assuming we are still talking about anime, why would this be weird? Hair/eye color isn't really an identifier, those come in the wildest combinations. Most characters are just drawn in a way that doesn't tell you anything about their ethnicity unless the artists deliberately want to add some identifiable features. It's not weird to assume that they'd just think that those characters belong to their own tribe, especially if they've been created by them.

But then you have the nips who will get """western consultants""" for their character designs, and you end up with shit like SF6's Kimberly, where you get an """inclusive""" character with clear racial features that goes so overboard that you could just stick a bone through her nose and put her in a early 20th century cartoon about tribal niggers.

I am hung up on the idea of an artist being able to truly separate themselves from the real life concepts they understand and identify with. I have seen works where the design was obviously influenced and executed to be a certain ethnicity and then I have seen works where they are suppose to be just colorful anime girls, where it blatantly looks like its it influenced by ethnicity. I view the characters from K-On! as Japanese or whatever, even the blue eyed blonds. But then you have sailor moon where it is much more difficult to deny. Guess I am trying to say that their is some unconscious cultural appropriation where they deny there is cultural appropriation, since all cultures influence each other over time. One of the best things about the game is getting to focus on certain characters more than if this were linear. Unfortunate that despite all the routes a lot of writers let a lot of the same characters still just be in the background and that’s how we ended up with no Kako or Moko route. And Takemaru gets to just be around except for 1 route he gets focus in a bad way.

The writing quality difference is pretty obvious in Box of [x], one path is copy/pasting the entire route except for major CG moments, the other path has everyone acting noticeably different.
Gaku gets a bit of spotlight in this path which is cool, but it still feels weird with everyone else acting just slightly differently than expected.

At least with Box of Calamity there’s crazy things going on that have the characters react in different ways. Hiruko making the dumbest decision ever does stand out though, but stuff like Gaku leaning into the spiritual stuff didn’t feel too out of character and then Nozomi and Shouma have certain other reasons for acting certain ways. Only route we get to see another Ima freak out which was interesting and definitely not ooc. Lot of crazy shit happening in that one
