It absolutely nails this unique, I dunno, utilitarian atmosphere. Big Shell has this effortless industrial charm to it, the kind you canโ€™t quite put into words. They probably didn't even think about it, but there's a particular allure in that industrial aesthetic: the exposed beams, steel frameworks, weathered surfaces, the vast expanses between them. The muted grey-blue and rusty orange tones give everything a sense of melancholy. The whole place feels very grand and quiet as you're running up above the world, surrounded by wind, open skies, and the hum of machinery. The great soundscape amplifies the feeling of solitude, too.
So basically I really like it, it's been 75 years and nothing else has quite captured this vibe again for me.

Big Shell is easily the most underrated setting in the series. Aesthetically it is absolutely fantastic.

Like fourth time I've played MGS2 in my life, first time I tried going for dogtags blind and got 40/78. Really not sure how I missed so many. In-game playtime was far lower cause I kept reloading cause of killing people by accident or just fucking around.

Forgot how quick the game ends after Shell 1 and its struts. Really wish there was more emphasis on Shell 2 and its struts. You kinda just go there after the harrier battle, get Emma and beat Vamp and come back.

It wasn't effortless the problem is the shit today IS effortless.
You think this shit is an accident? Kojima is obsessed with offshore platforms and it'a obvious. FOBs would have been even better than big shell if you got to utilize more interiors, but I get why the limitations are what they are.

I cannot play these games with modern controllers.

I've finished them multiple times back on the ps2 using the pressure sensitive buttons which modern controllers don't have and it's just so shitty, not being able to hold your gun up without firing or using some weird button combos.

It really feels so bad to play with the subpar controls.
It's a shame those poor gaming companies can't afford to keep making pressure sensitive buttons, at least we get analog sticks that drift after half a year.

Ok maybe anons in this thread can assist me

I want to play the MGS games 1-4. Never played any before aside from Rising
I'd prefer to get physical copies of the games for the ones I can and avoid emulators because my experience with them is mostly bad for games newer than like the year 2000 in spite of what people say.
I have a PS3, a fat one with 2 ports.
Based on what research I've already done, that means it's only backward compatible with PS1, but not PS2.
I have a DS4 controller
I also had a DS3 but it's fucked.

I plan to buy physical MGS 1 and 4 second hand and play them on my PS3 and 2 and 3 probably just the steam versions because frankly I don't really want to bother with emulators and I'm not buying a whole second hand PS2 just for the two games.

Now here's the part i don't really get - did I understand correctly that you can't properly control the games unless you have an original DS1/DS2/DS3 controller? Because they have some pressure sensitive shit called sixaxis that apparently doesn't exist in any third party or newer controller like my DS4, and the games will not properly work without it?
How crippling is this to the experience exactly if I attempt to just use my DS4? Unplayable or just might miss out on some optional stuff or something?

Do I need to also try to find a DS2/DS3 controller online in addition to the games themselves to try to get something closer to an authentic experience?

If I do get my hands on physical disks for MGS1, MGS4 and the steam versions for MGS2 and MGS3 plus somehow find an old ass out of production controller for sale, is my plan overall sound?

Iโ€™ve only played the HD versions, I think they control fine. Essentially they mapped one pressure sensitive button press to a click of the left stick (for controllers that donโ€™t have pressure sensitive buttons), otherwise thereโ€™s no discernible difference, any suggestion otherwise is hysteria.

it lacks a couple minigames and has a few bugs, that's it. Download the mod patches that fix most of the issues with the Master Collection versions.

The only ones that truly suffer are the MSX2 Metal Gear games and Metal Gear Solid 1. Absolutely shameful garbage ports that are slow, inconsistent fps, lots of bugs from the original inferior ports, no widescreen or high resolution despite what they advertise, but it's also not even a purist experience because of all the jank added by the pc ports.

Emulate the actual MSX2 versions of MG 1 and 2 with the fan translation patches if needed for the best experience and the full script (the revised English script in the HD versions is cut down)

Emulate MGS 1 in Duckstation where you can either play MGS 1 exactly as it was on the ps1 minus the load times, or you can get an actual truly high-res, widescreen experience where everything is sharp, and crisp, and stable.

Big Boss says he knew because Naomi told him. Naomi knew where the real Big Boss was the whole time along with Eva and Ocelot and left him a recording explaining the plot at some point. Yes, Naomi was in on the conspiracy the whole time... somehow.
She wanted what Ocelot and Eva wanted because Gray Fox adopted her and Big Boss bankrolled them both until Hard Boner killed them. Raiden and Eva were the ones that initially recovered Big Boss and Sunny off screen.

Snake doesn't die from Foxdie's programming because Naomi formulates a vaccine she gives him in quid pro quo, off screen, this was a minigame in the Integral version of the VR missions. They had an idea for a game that never got made between MGS 1 and 2 where Snake and Hal break Naomi out of prison in exchange for the vaccine.

Officially they're both terrorists and what they're doing is terrorism. They are assassinating the chief officer of a global US defense conglomerate under the table. Originally destroying sop had secondary effects that would have upended global society, throwing the world into chaos and destroying the financial system. They were going to be convicted and executed by firing squad on grounds of insurrection and High Treason for doing the needful. According to MGR it basically happened anyways.

Get a PS2 and play MGS1, 2 and 3 there. The PS3 HD versions of MGS2 and 3 are okay, Peace Walker is kinda preferable there if you don't want portability but play MGS1 on an actual PS1 or PS2 console because the in-game music is a little better there than on PS3 or any emulation.

No it's mgs 2 because it's critical of the mg formula and basically brings it to conclusion in the most mindfucking way possible, as to say "you can't top this", and indeed no mgs game after this one has had a twist as grandiose as 2's. And that's because it was designed that way, it's a goodbye to mgs (while 4 was a goodbye to the fans)

i just want a mgs2 remake that doesn't improve the graphics beyond maybe some sharpness to textures, but actually lets you go over and under every strut
rewrite the story a little bit so the start of the game lasts longer and you have to visit every strut too
always hated how half of the big shell was missing
very nice game, my favourite in the franchise actually
always considered this game the last real metal gear solid game
3 is just a run north simulator with 10 different versions of stealth camo you have to switch between for "engagement"
i really miss games from the ps2 era

All you have to do is set up a button combo to alter the pressure. I forget the exact layout I used, but it wasn't an issue at all. The real pressure sensitive shenanigans stems from weapons, but it's still not that hard to work around.

Many interviews, it's why all the side titles were handled by other directors too.
But it turned out a lot more complicated than expected for main Metal Gear entries, there was some attempts, but none of them were successful
But it might end up happening in the future, a new team for Metal Gear was made, and unless Kojima returns somehow, it's up to them to continue his old legacy. Perhaps they will succeed in what previous generations failed, or maybe the struggle will continue.

the real issue with PO is that it was trying to control itself like it was a PS2 game, but the lack of the two joysticks screwed things up, you can't just take the gameplay of MGS3 on another system with much less buttons. I applaud them trying but the end result was clumsier than a clown in a circus.
