I would not go nearly so far as to say that they "suck ass" compared to Thracia's animations. in a lot of ways they are better. if you just compare a random combat scene in Thracia to a random combat in GBAFE most people are probably going to like the GBA look better

but Thracia did have some crazy detailed logic governing the placement of actors and had some context-sensitive animations that would only play rarely. very very cool stuff but ultimately it's dev time spent on details that a lot of people aren't going to see and those who see it might not even really notice it or appreciate it, so I can see why it wasn't carried forward to future 2d entries. (plus Kaga left the company after 5 and I assume it was his attention to detail that pushed the team to make all of those animations and logic in the first place.)

If you want more 2d games check out Kaga’s games, he’s the creator of Fire Emblem who left. His games include Tear Ring Saga, Berwick Saga and Vestaria Saga 1 and 2. They’re a bit janky and odd but have great puzzles in the maps.

If you look at swordmasters in Awakening and Fates for example, their movements are a lot less exaggerated and they fight with normal sword swings for the most part. Meanwhile in the GBA titles myrmidons do a flip, dab, and split into three afterimages all in one go.

Leif's first attack is a crit (which doesn't kill), he does a backflip a set distance then hops forward and does a jumping attack for his crit animation. then his follow-up attack is an upward slash instead of a downward slash, because his arm was in a low position after the first attack

Leif's first attack is a crit and it's the same jumping attack as in the webm, BUT it skips the backflip which is probably inserted into the logic for a critique counterattack to put some space between the actors before the jump. I think the jump is also higher and has more airtime. then the follow-up is also a crit which triggers a unique spin animation before the backflip and then a new critical animation where he dashes toward the opponent on the ground instead of jumping.

The first attack is a crit, and it's fatal. Leif does yet another completely different multihit attack animation.

I'm not sure if Leif has a separate animation for "first attack is a counterattack that *does* kill", but he might for all I know.

none of these are as flashy and overwhelming as the craziest GBA crit animations (Berserker, Swordmaster, Assassin) but they're modular and there's a surprising amount of unique behavior and animations when you add up all of the different classes in the game. also, you can see the weapons they have equipped in the battle animations, which is neat. later 3d games reintroduced that feature along with dynamic position tracking but I don't think any of the modern games have battle scenes that look as good as Thracia's or those of the GBA games.

It depends how I'm feeling. I like using Gonzo but his retarded con is kind of a nuisance because he just straight up can't be rescued by anyone after promoting. First hero crest always goes to Rutger, then the second will go to Dieck if he is leveling up well. Or Gonzo if I'm feeling that.

I just did Minerva's map. The one I was thinking of I believe was Rad and Caesars mission, I had to run my Marth to the end before my line gave in. The stages definitely come with real small starting enemy amounts, and they are still giving the bosses no way to deal with ranged fighters.

Oh yeah, the reinforcements in minerva's map are tough.
In minerva's map I had to trap the enemies in a choke point (with a horseman in front so my unit was completely safe).
In Radd and Caesar's map I kept my units out of range of the enemy horsemen and they never came after me, but a bunch of reinforcements came out when I moved near the boss.
The pirate map between those too can also be tricky if the enemies don't spread out.

Later in the game you can snipe a few bosses with ballistas to prevent waves of reinforcements from pouring out.
