Elves in Dragon Age USED to be that but their golden age is far, far behind them. They've lost their immortality, they're basically second class citizens living in slums in human cities, they've tried multiple times to recapture their lost glory but only fall further from it on each failed attempt. Some of them do still make a living for themselves out in the woods away from humans but are struggling to reclaim even a fragment of their lost history. I find them fascinating in these regards, how they are either thieves/beggars scraping by in human cities or wandering native-esque tribals inna woods who have no real home of their own and are trying to reclaim a lost identity. That their golden age is long behind them and this is what's left.
