I DID pick Kaiden because:

1. Sending Ashley with the Salarians makes more sense to me because they have technical skills down pat but aren't much good with slugging it out in heavy armour, which Ashley can help them with;

2. The bomb is critical to the mission and making sure it goes off is priority one, and because of the previous decision Kaiden happened to be the one with the bomb;

3. Even if I had been looking at it purely from the point of view of just rescue one or the other, Kaiden is a biotic which is a rare and valuable tactical resource in the Alliance whereas Ashley is, though a good infantrywoman, still only infantry of which there billions of potential replacements on Earth.

I was roleplaying ruthless Shepard at the time though. Maybe a war hero would have looked at it differently.

When I first played the original after it got a PC port, I started as Maleshep because I'm a dude and I typically play dudes.
The first conversation with Nihlus, I chose "Beyond beautiful" and got him reading (incredibly derpy) "They say...it's a...paradise."
I deleted my character and started Femshep. I played that game probably 50 times, and never wanted to play Maleshep.

I went to prison for 13 years. About halfway through my sentence, they issued us these really shitty armv7a tablets running Jellybean, locked down. We figured out how to hax them, and loading them up with movies/porn/games/etc became the thing to do. After a while, I got a bug up my ass to find commentary free playthroughs on YouTube and watch them, since I couldn't play modern games. I watched a Femshep run of all 3, and reasonably enjoyed it (though the faggot chose Liara). I was drifting back to 4chan with increased internet access on smuggled phones, and was hearing that Maleshep was overall better. I played him on a run when I got out, and agreed. I'm currently finishing up the trilogy on a replay.
