Because your character doesn’t have a character aside from the one that you give them. They can be as fucked up or nonplussed as you make them. Boone on the other hand is dealing with it in the most functional way possible since he hasn’t completely shut down or killed himself. He’s still doing shit.

Hard to pick, but I think Raul. I love his perspective on the world as a whole, how he gives tons of context about what was happening in Mexico, and how his story isn't focused on all the bickering factions in the Mojave, but instead how he fits into the world as someone growing older by the day.

I actually love how he's one of the few characters that doesn't really have a strong opinion on one faction or another. He's seen the good and bad they all have, seen their kind in one shape or another, and has learned that, no matter how dire things get, life still comes after. And he has to figure out what that means for him. Whether that's getting back into the fight with what he has left, or finally finding some measure of peace with all he's gone through.

It's a nice break from the constant BEARBULLBEARBULL nonsense that dives into a very real dilemma people face, something that's kind of rare in the Fallout games. After all of the years of fighting and surviving, what do you do when it's finally over? It's why the Survivalist's story is so good. What do you do once you've found peace? Live out the rest of your days? Or invite more chaos in the hopes that you make one final bit of good in the world?

ED-E is the obvious choice and the only one I actually like.
Then it's a toss-up between Boone and Veronica.
Veronica is okay to look at but a lesbo so meh.
Boone is useful in combat but is NCR aligned and boring in general.

The others are all non-options and I never use them, at this point though i'd just mod in a better companion. Elder Scrolls definitely did better on companions.
