What are the best Lovecraftian games that are NOT directly inspired by his works?
Anonymous No.713196359 >>713199084
Cultist Simulator for sure, the lovecraft inspiration is evident but its very much its own unique thing

Darkwood doesn't really have any direct references to Lovecraft, but it may have been inspired by him. It's cosmic horror anyway

I don't know why people praise it so much, there's literally no mood to anything once you're out the starting area with the fish that pretends to be a boat

I really wish Cultist Sim was a bit more flexible with its system, once you get into it you realize there's certain hoops you have to jump through just to have a decent chance of success so repeat playthroughs become repetitive slogs.
It's a shame because I really love the lore and presentation, but it's way more formulaic than initial impressions would have you believe.

Sundered, though it does have 2 bosses that are lovecraft characters, and does referance characters in item descriptions and names, like atlach nacha for example

If you are implying it is not directly inspired by Lovecraft then you may be on some shit I need to try. Also the game is fucking boring.

Lord Dunsany was worshipped by Lovecraft and based his entire writing style and literary legacy on him. And yet everyone only remembers Lovecraft... for copying another man.

PATHETIC.

Lovecraft knew he was nothing but a fraud, as mentioned in his letters. His entire literary career is an ode to five or six stories written by LD.

I know it's a random EXE file on the internet, but the creator of Fictional Games made the ultimate HP Lovecraft game in highschool. It actually captures Lovecraft amazingly. Its called Fiend. It's talked about on the frictional Games website. Cheap 2d game from the creator of Soma when he was 17ish.

Basically shit that focuses on beings and shit from the cosmos or even beyond our reality so utterly alien that simply laying eyes on them or even comprehend them will drive someone mad. For most shit inspired by his works, there's an emphasis on the sheer insignificance of mankind in the face of such beings. A good example would be the John Dies at the End series with shit like the walking shadows, creatures that can fuck with time as they please and would completely rewrite your entire life so you are now a cross dressing gay hooker obsessed with injecting heroin directly into your dick hole and as fast as you and the entire world is concerned, you've always been that way just because they had a passing urge to do so.
